How to keep mare out of heat...?

OOPS, just saw this is an OLD thread. Below still applies.

Just curious, is she on MSM? I have a pony that always had almost silent heats, I put her on MSM as a joint supplement and her heats got really bad. Took her off it and back to her old self. BTW, this happened in her 20s and I have owned her all her life.

Oral Regumate is super easy to give. People seem to be afraid of it for some reason. The bottle has a leur lock tip to screw a syringe onto. I leave my 10 cc attached.

The injectable is good too. Altrenogist. I used the 10 day on a mate a couple years ago. The difference is that it is strongest as soon as it is injected then slowly wears off. Some horses need to be given the injection more often than evey 10 days. There is a 30 day injection as well but it has even more variability.
Regumate is the most consistant.

I’ve also used progesterone implants. Those suck.

And I had a really rank mare overectimied. Lol. I had her ovaries yanked. It kept us all alive. It’s a done deal though. It keft three inch sized scars on each flank.
I would not do that to a mare unless I was 5 billion times sure I would never need to breed. If the horse gets hurt you may need to breed or give her away as a broody.
Keep that option open.
