How to make Uncle Jimmy horse chew

Happy holidays! Hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy.

I recently discovered uncle Jimmy’s horse chew/lick, and my horse, Diego, is obsessed with them. He loves the molasses one. However I do not have the money to be consistently giving them to him to keep him entertained in his stall. Does anyone know how to make these for cheaper?

I use a Bundt cake pan and make similar treats for my pony. I hang with hay string and he seems to like them.

I used hay pellets, flax, chopped dried apple, carrots, sugar free syrup, no sugar added applesauce and baked till dry. I’m sure you could make them better or easier with grain and molasses or something else sticky, but I need low sugar. You can also freeze Gatorade with treats in it in the summer in the Bundt pan and let the horse enjoy it.

I’m thinking that an angel food pan or a spring form pan might work well, too.

I tried this, and it was a huge hit, but a giant sticky mess, not something I’d make too often! Mine was sugary (I used molasses), but as a reat my horse was very happy with it. I like the idea of the lower sugar version, maybe I’ll try that. Here is my recipe:

2 cups molasses (or corn syrup)
1-1/3 cup sugar
1/2 to 1 cup corn meal (could use flour)
2 cups feed (whatever: hay pellets, sweet feed, rice bran, oatmeal)

(You are essentially making an old school popcorn ball, for our horses. )

I have full instructions on my blog:

The trick is coating everything with oil, I didn’t cook mine in a pan on the stove. I stirred everything in my kitchen aid, greased the Bundt pan, mine is fairly plain, packed everything in and baked at 300 F till firm. Let it cool for a few minutes but flip out before fully cooled. Super easy cleanup, and took about 30minutes from start to finish to make.
