I got a new gate after my horse bent the other one and after 4 days of trying and failing we tried to get it installed today. The hinge sleeves are at the wrong heights and won’t come off the gate. Can someone please explain how on earth I am supposed to adjust these? I’m just about crying at this point from frustration.
A picture would help?
Hinges should be able to be adjusted on the gate and on the post it hangs from, or both.
Unless super heavy duty ones welded all around on both.
Are they hinges attached with a bolt, welded on the pipe?
What did the old gate look like?
Did it have hinges you can take off and add to the new one in places they will fit?
If you have hinges on the gate that move up and down, with a bolt, they should pry off so you can change them.
My 14 year old employees dad saw what we were doing and helped us. Gate is hung. Thanks all. hangs head in shame
No shame, everyone has to learn some time how those things work.
Once you have hung a few, any new tricky hinges are easy to figure out.
I bet next time you will be able to help someone else, now that you know how.
Yup. When people ask how I know how to do all “this stuff”. Experience based on the fact I never usually had the money to pay others. I have always been a “MacGyver” type. Figuring out how to do things a bit better, easier the next time.
Before the internet a lot of time was spend figuring things out. I also have a pretty large reference book collection. Not really needed now. All of it and more can be found on the Net pretty much for free. Lots of good MacGyvers, DIYers that take the time to make and post videos. That can walk people through the process.
Saves people a lot of time and money from buying worthless “T-shirts” too.
He was even nice enough to put it an additional foot higher off the ground, so now it clears the snow AND hopefully dummy won’t be tempted to go over it again. Next time I will know how to do this–we were using the wrong tools which was not helping!
I keep a “gate” repair kit together in one place - 9/16" combo wrench, small sledgehammer, WD-40 and a huge combo wrench. The closed end of the huge combo wrench fits over the “L” shaped hinge screwed into the post and makes it really easy to screw it it in further or unscrew it - with very little effort.
I hope your horse decides to stay put now and I’m glad he wasn’t seriously injured. If you have a metal recycling place in your area, take them the ruined gate and get some cash for it.
