How to price items for tack swap

I’m terrible at selling stuff but I’m going to try to sell some saddle pads, halters, fly masks, etc at a local tack swap before I donate it all.

The fly masks are Cashel with ears. I was thinking $10 for the one with wear on the ears and the one that looks brand new $15. Too high, too low?

Too high for my area, YMMV :woman_shrugging:
For the flymasks - like new $10 OBO
For any wear $5 OBO
Same for English type saddle pads, big Western style might get $15-20
Nylon halters: $5
Leather: $15-20 - higher price for solid brass or namebrand like Walsh.
Look at it this way:
If you get there early to set up, walk around & see what others are asking for similar.
You’ve gotten your use from the items, may as well get something back ,& have less “stuff” cluttering the barn.
I got 2 horse-sized full flysheets - both in good shape, no tears or missing straps/buckles - for $15ea a couple years ago.

Okay, thanks. I’ll revise my pricing strategy. I was trying to get some money back since the ungrateful horse decided he can’t possibly wear fly masks with ears anymore.

One was a half day wear and fling off.

I’ll look at it as you said and those fly sheets were crazy cheap!

I know!
& they weren’t even for me, a friend asked me to look for them

I live in QH/WP Land, an aged (but in good condition) Stubben A/P I tried to sell got zero interest. Asking $200 w/girth, irons & leathers.
Tried 3X, 3 different swaps & Zip.
I finally donated it to a theraputic program.

Generally I price used stuff at 1/2 retail, less if there’s damage or obvious wear.

Ebay is a great place to find prices for things but may be a bit inflated compared with a tack swap.

Depends on if you want to pack up all the stuff and take it home again. Price it low enough to get attention and reduce if someone asks. After two tack swaps I consigned the more valuable stuff and donated the rest. It’s just not worth the hassle.

Guess it depends on what you are selling, and your time. I am not giving most of my stuff away! It usually is in good condition, leather is soft and flexible. Things are CLEAN. Halters, blankets, leather goods. People appreciate things being clean.

Most of my stuff is priced at about 3/4 cost of new, in good working condition. Saddles are not high priced because they were middle-of-the-road prices when new. Good leather, but not thousands when new.

One of those “you can always come down” during the dickering. Can’t raise the prices once you start! Starting with a higher price lets you still get a fair value if price is dropped. Anyone who doesn’t ask about a lower price at tack sales wasn’t raised right!!

As 2Dogs said, you can find some excellent values on things by looking around. Sales here often have a “no early sales rule” to prevent vendors buying the good stuff early. They say you will be asked to leave!!

I usually make pretty good money at tack sales. This is minus your booth and lunch costs. There are a couple REALLY GOOD sales that see lots of buyers come thru. Two I sell at, one I shop at. Usually I see folks I never see otherwise. We catch up as they shop, so a social event for me. Pocket full of money is nice too. AND less stuff to maintain at home. I have stuff packed now, ready for my first tack sale in Jan. And somehow there are now 4 lovely saddles to go, none of which I ever sat in on a horse!!

So in my limited experience selling horse stuff. Seasonal things sell better and at higher prices when in season. So if your in North America this is not the fly mask season so you may want to price low to get rid of them. OTOH, if you have any used blankets now is an excellent time to sell them.

Nylon halters are almost give away here unless they are pristine and in popular colors; ditto for rope halters.

I stink at pricing but I made a go. I’m not expecting much turnout but maybe there will be another one in the spring.

Unfortunately I don’t have any turnouts to sell. I’ve got two new in bag stable blankets, 1 water “resistant” sheet that I’ll give if someone needs it before it gets trashed and a brand new fleece saddle pad I found.

It was too small for my saddle. I have no idea why I bought so much stuff. I have enough for 4 horses, not just my one.
