How to prune River Birch trees

Last fall I planted six River Birch trees along a fence line. Despite my lack of a green thumb they have survived:) They are about 4ft tall now but look more like a bush…ie; there is no “trunk”, although these trees are multi-trunked for a lack of what I am sure has a proper term. Should I prune them to a few stal that would become the trunk? Leave them alone until they get big enough and then prune them back?

How does one foster growth of a multi-trunked tree?

What shape were they when you bought them? I love them, and mine had 3-4 established trunks each and had the lower branches pruned, so they already looked like trees. Plus, mine were about 10 ft tall when I got them. Now they are huge and beautiful. Maybe check a gardening website? As they get older, the trunks will separate, so you want them to be very close together when young.

cut thin stuff out, leave about 5 trunks, I think uneven numbers are suggested.

Then trim small branches off the trunk to a desired height to form a crown.
