How to Qualify for Devon for the A/A Jumpers

Hello!

I’m interested in qualifying for Devon 2018 for the Adult Amateur Jumper Division. I’m trying to read up on it and how to qualify. The 2017 prize list says that it’s not based on money won for the qualifying period (like how it is for the A/O and Junior Jumpers), but it is “Pony and Adult Jumper Sections restricting entries based on winnings will use US Equestrian National Horse of the Year points received at all shows starting on or after April 4, 2016 through shows starting on or before April 2, 2017 as means of qualification, using the best points earned at no more than 15 horse shows during this time period.” Does this mean when I go the USEF Horse Report, it is only my “Nat points good” or do the “Zone points good” count? I have only ever received zone points through a/a classes and I stalked someone who made it this year and the total is her zone points.

Also, what would be a “reasonable” number of shows to do throughout the year - as long as we place in them (I know there are tons of variables like how I place, how big the classes are, etc.).

Thanks!

There is a not a formula for this as there is no standard required points to get in. Its based on those with the most points so its a moving target year to year. To get an idea I would look at those that qualified. How many shows did they do and how good were their results. I don’t know about the jumpers but it takes a lot of points to get into the Hunter divisions.

Do the A/A Jumpers get national points?

“will use US Equestrian National Horse of the Year points received at all shows” = Unless I’m misreading, points you accrue outside of your home zone would count towards qualifying (i.e. if you live in NY but go to WEF in the winter and get points, those would count).

As Blinky said, look at the list of people who qualified this year and what the point cut off is. Its entirely dependent on who actually enters, but the division definitely seems to be growing more popular each year.

Thank you guys!!

Do you have to send something in saying you’re interested in Devon? Or do the top people get qualified/notified regardless?

I saw most of the classes in that division last year in person as a spectator. It’s extremely competitive–a large percentage of the riders seemed to be future pros who were currently in college, or the SOs of pros. (Not saying that you wouldn’t be competitive, OP, just a comment!).

You have to send in an entry before the closing date (this year it was April 3rd).

From my understanding, you send your entry in by the entry date to be considered and they take a restricted # of entries. These are ranked by points won using each individual entries best 15 horse shows during the qualifying period. This makes it so the horses who show 30 times a year have the same shot as those that show 15 times a year. It is just about who is more successful at their best 15 shows. I found this is the prizelist because I was curious of the same thing! Hope that helps!.
