6 year old medium pony popped a small splint. Likely due to an injury as he is pretty correct conformationally. What is your go to remedy to reduce the splint? Not sore to touch, not lame.
Has anyone used Splintex Gold?
DMSO?
Furision Sweat?
anything else?
In the old days we used dmso with azium. A packet of azium dissolved in 8oz of dmso and painted on, plus or minus a wrap. Today probably surpass or voltaren.
Thanks
I used Voltaren & had them injected. You can barely feel them now 2 years later.
What did you have them injected with?
Steroids, and I think an anti-inflammatory. He did caution me that I might not get that great of results as he thought I waited too long. I think it was like 6-8 days before I got her in. Within the first week, they decreased substantially, then continued to decrease slower over the next year. Vet did say it would take that long. She was just on stall rest, bandaged and some Bute for 3 days, then like work for a week or something, then back to normal.
My 6 year old recently popped a splint in the pasture, and it was warm to the touch. I had the vet out and they xrayed and it was pretty classic. Probably a hard knock from his other front shod hoof. Anyway, she had me wrap and bute for a week, then surpass (voltaren) a few times a day. She wanted him rested for six weeks (which may be on the conservative side for a standard splint with no fracture). It has reduced a little but is still present. I think rest is your best friend because there is a ligament involved in splint injuries.
Many years ago, I imported a mare who popped two giant front splints during her travels, just below the knee on the inside. The vet said they were the biggest splints he had ever seen. The mare was 5 at the time and was given the first few months after import off anyway, as she needed teeth done, saddle fit, vaccinations, shoeing. By the time she was 8 and done growing, they were completely gone.
I’ve had success with shockwave. If small, maybe only one treatment.
