How to secure geotextile...

I bought and laid out my geotextile for my paddock project… Unfortunately I ran into a little issue… I bought the staples that were recommended to secure it but my base is waaaaay too hard. They just bend right in half. Are there any other options for pinning it down?

I’m thinking something stronger like a nail or stake with a large washer to keep it from punching through would work, but I’m a bit concerned about having them work their way out and ending up in a hoof.

You’re supposed to pin it down? I just laid it down on my driveway and the dump truck driver spread gravel over it. It’s been about 11 yrs and no problems.

Ok - that’s good to know as I was thinking I might just do the same thing. These are what was recommended to me:

Thanks, shakeytails, I was feeling like a dope there for a minute – we have a few hundred feet of geotex lining our farm road, under a layer of road base, 3/4 minus & stone dust. It stays put, and it’s on a hill and I drive a UTV with really aggressive tread up & down it like a NASCAR driver 3x a day

I’ve seen gardeners pin it down with tent stakes. But, I’ve never seen any sort of staple or stake in a paddock installation. Just lots and lots of rock.

YAY! I’ll just pile my gravel on top then. I was trying to get those damn things in yesterday and was seriously aggravated.

You can use piles of gravel to hold it down while getting material on top of it. The “primary” reason for the staples or pins is to keep it in place while you do the next step, although security the perimeter is a good idea when you can so that edges can’t be forced up by ground water and ground movement. (Yea…that can happen even with a lot of heavy stuff on top…don’t underestimate “mother nature”)

Put gravel right on it. Those staples have no business being near horses!!

Yes, I’m doing kickboards on the downhill side to keep everything in place. After digging the mud out it’s got kind of a natural perimeter along the fence line that should be adequate.

Y’all have no idea how happy I was to have my big pile o’ gravel delivered today. The mud this year was just awful. Can’t wait to have dry, happy horses next winter!!! Even better - the county is reimbursing me for 50% of the cost through our awesome farm plan program

Put a few piles of gravel at the corners, and here and there, to keep it in place as you spread the rest of the gravel

Thanks all for the advice. I got the first load of gravel spread yesterday and it looks great! I gotta say, I’m pretty proud of myself. My SO helped me cut some rebar to secure the kickboards but other than that I did the entire project myself  One or two more loads of gravel and we’ll be all set for winter!
