How your horse is *really* destroying his turnout blankets

You come home and find Dobbin cold in the pasture, with a heap of tattered fabric next to him. Poor dear, he must have gotten tangled in something! Or maybe you know better…

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Omg that is hysterical! And I am positive that’s what is happening at my house! Only my youngster is removing my retired guy’s blanket and cavorting around with that… Cuz you know, he wants to be warm but the old guy can totally rough it, right? He also only pees in the old guy’s stall cuz he wouldn’t want to ruin his own clean shavings  So obnoxious!

That’s really funny. There was a horse at one barn who was removing his coat in one piece, spending the day standing and peeing on it.

One day I was the only one at the barn, picking up paddocks, and watched him do it. He pulled the blanket from the shoulders until it was up over his neck, more, pulled at his chest until it was way up, then backed out of it. Unreal. Frequently, the blanket was being found trammeled, buckled up still, and peed on in his paddock. Himself, looking innocent and like…What! Nothing going on here.

My TBs loved to play snatch the blanket. One day I found a Rambo on the ground, every surcingle still buckled as well as the front. Another day, one pulled a liner out from the other’s blanket and they played keep away with it…it was shredded.

How is that possible with leg straps done up?

So? The problem is international?
A Conspiracy?

I firmly believe the effort to trash a blanket is in exact proportion to how much it cost.
My $69 Special bought 3 yrs ago is still pristine.
Helps that I rarely blanket, but still…

Looks like he did kill it, hope he is happy now.

Perhaps it was one of those European-type covers with a fillet string at the back, rather than crossed leg straps?

I, too, have a blanket pee-er on-er. If I forget and leave a blanket folded over his stall door I will remember it in a blaze of panic. “Oh god! It’s probably wizzed on by now!” I am usually right.

Saw that last night on FB and laughed through it at least 3x!

The most hilarious part for me was that he’s timing his canter with the blanket swing…it almost looks like he’s skipping, LOL!

Years ago had a gelding that somehow took the blanket off of my mare and had it bunched around his neck. The belly straps were still done and one leg strap was still done.

Still not sure how he did that. Stumped me when I walked into the barnyard and the mare was naked and the gelding comes walking around the barn wearing his blanket and an enormous “new” turtleneck.

He was 15.1 hh and she was 17 hh. He must have been really determined.

Rambo style blankets just peel off, easy peasy if you have a clever warmblood! Or a mare who runs hot and does her own blanket changes. Or a bored youngster…

I’ve never caught my gelding doing it but he regularly takes his blanket or rain sheet off, leg straps intact, surcingles buckled up.

Bwhahahaha!!! I’m laughing extra hard because it’s NOT MY HORSE!

Hmmm. Explains not only how blanket is destroyed but where those mysterious wounds come from – buckle and hardware gouges.

not a surprise, as this is exactly how I always pictured it. Except I expected to him to dance on it at the end.

Yup
One of the funniest things I’ve seen was a horse blanketed complete with hood, cantering around his muddy paddock, COMPLETELY coated with mud.
Not sure how much was gained by having a partly clean horse but that blanket/hood to deal with. Hope they had a spare.

That’s hilarious. Now that my boy is turned out with the gelding herd again I am NOT looking forward to blanket season.
