HOYS (UK) Working Hunter Course

On the Horse & Hound website there’s a course walk of the fences for the Working Hunter of the Year class which takes place at HOYS today.

I know we recently had a rather heated debate about the difference between hunters in the US and UK so I’m not looking to rehash that - just thought you guys might find course interesting

A few are a little cartoonish, but overall very cool! Wish I knew where to find video of the winning round

Oh my, the ducks on Fence 5! Particularly the massive duck on the high option…

That looks so fun! I would love to jump that course. The scariest part to me is the lighting…so shadowy.

OMG how totally, absolutlely, cool and terrifying all at the same time. I especially love (am terrified) at the fence with the fir trees and boulders!

OMG Fence 12. I love it! That’s the best fence of the entire course.

I agree that some of them are kind of cartoonish…but it looks so awesome as a whole. I want to see video!!!

wowzers!

The class was yesterday and THIS LADY won it on Colimbo Nimbus (Cloudy). If you look through her videos you’ll see that her horses get a variety of work.

I find the lighting more terrifying than the jumps! Though I am questioning the very last jump with the big boulder right next to where your approach would be.

Fence 7 is really neat with all the shapes. I also think 9 is pretty. The squirrels on 10 made me laugh. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for posting this - she’s got some lovely horses.

I would imagine that the boulder is there to force you to approach on an angle. I think there was only one clear round so I’d be interested to see if that fence caused problems for the others.

I jumped the working hunters at HOTY show back in the 70’s and the fences then, though huge, were not nearly as picturesque and we also jumped outside in London. This course looks fun but you all are right about the lighting!

I just sent that link to one my friends who reaches Hunt seat. The EMT’s will get there soon.

It is also worth pointing out that there are Show Hunter Classes and Working Hunter Classes in the UK. WH horses are EXPECTED to do what would be required out in the field. (Meaning that rocks are not always in the right place)
They are also ridden by the judge, and judged for manners and conformation (which should be stockier and more workmanlike than a show hunter).

I was looking to see if there was anything on Youtube for the HOYS working hunters yet but found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMLczlSoCm8 which is a poem traditionally read at the closing of the show
And the pony club games have nothing to do with H/J but is fun

Growing up, it was my dream to compete in the Prince Philip Cup mounted games at HOYS. That and doing the Mini/Major relay at Olympia with John Whitaker. (Who am I kidding? I’m almost forty, and would love to have a bash at either competition.)

There is video on Amy James’ youtube channel. Link above

As above, here’s the link to the video:

for anyone wondering about the sketchy lighting, those photos were taken in an interval or as the course was being set- when jumping takes place the ring is BRIGHT!!
