I have always enjoyed watching this class but this year, not so much. Am I alone in that feeling?

You’re not alone. After all that about Derbies being a place to show brilliance, the best horse with the best rounds did not win. In my view, Lafitte had done his job when the crowd erupted. The judges who ignored his reaction were well within their discretion to do so, and in my view, did the horse world a great service.
I don’t enjoy watching horses ridden to unnatural extremes at the high levels. And to deny them their natual horse instincts makes things worse. I end up wondering what is being done to them behind the scenes.
