Hunt horses for lease/rental in VA

A group from our hunt will be coming to Virginia for a week of hunting in December. I thought it might be easier and cheaper to rent/lease a horse for the 3 hunts we are contemplating.

Can anyone give me info on who in Virginia provides this service?

Well … what hunts???
There are several hunt liveries in NoVa area, plus many (such as myself) with a couple extras that often hire out.
More details and I can provide ##s.
Prices range from $100-$300 or so, per hunt. I think trainers sometimes charge a cap fee (theirs) too for taking horses to a hunt they don’t belong to already.

The hunts we were going to go out with would be Deep Run and Keswick.

If it is at the upper end of your range, then it would be cheaper to bring our own horses. As for paying someone else’s cap fee on top, not sure why I would do that, all I need is the horses, don’t need a trainer to tag along.

ETA: How much would I be looking at for stabling if we brought down our own horses?

Thanks for your help.

Most people renting out hunt horses that I know of are in the $150-250 range per hunt.

Most people do this as they require being able to keep an eye on their hunt horses if they don’t know the person renting them. Good, easy to ride ones are not cheap, and lets face it, a lot of time people exaggerate their “riding abilities”. If someone is on them that is not riding them well, with the potential to screw them up, then there is the opportunity to stop it and require them to return to the meet at the first opportunity.

If you are going out with Keswick, give Sally Lamb a call. She might have some extras to rent out.

What SSR said - I absolutely insist upon going with my horses to make sure all is ok, plus to provide a ‘spare’ if one of their rentals loses a shoe, doesn’t work for them, etc. I know of no livery that doesn’t enforce that rule.
Overnight boarding ranges $25 and up. I include bedded stall, first feeding hay, buckets, etc., use of wash stall and or vaccuum. Others may charge more. Few charge less.

Thanks for the info. That is a good price for a stall!

Hunter’s Rest is terrific! I think you would have a very good time. she is knowledgable and a very good horsewoman. I loved hunting with her at Rappanhannock and watching her bring along a new horse.

About 7 years ago with my college equestrian club, we went hunting with Keswick and rented all our horses from Sally Lamb. All the horses were fabulous! I was hilltopping (1st time hunting) and had just the best horse! No one had any complaints about their mounts.

I’ll second the recommendation for Hunter’s Rest. If you do go with her request the horse “X”. He is amazing!

(blush) (X is still going strong - a grandpa leased him yesterday to go with Melvin Poe to pony his daughter on one of my ponies. He was foot perfect.)
Alas, I don’t live anywhere near Deep Run.
