Hunt photos from 9/9/09

Well, I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a vacation day than hunting! Wednesday, 9/9/09, was the joint meet between the Wentworth and Myopia Hunt Clubs at Yorkfield Farm in Kensington, NH.

Here are some photos of my mare and I:

Yeah for you and I’m pea green with envy! Tell about your mare, she looks like a blast to ride!

Our cubbing has been delayed by one week so hound exercises have been holding me over now for a month.

Thanks for posting the link to those pics!

That mare is so much fun. She doesn’t give anything away so you have to really be on your game to ride her, but when you are, she is amazing! She’s taught me so much.

I purchased her as a 6 month old from my boss at the time. She had been orphaned at 28 days (dam coliced) and I had been in charge of bottle feeding her when I fell completely in love. I can still vividly remember cradling her head under my arm while she suckled on that 2 liter bottle of milk replacer. Hard to believe she was ever that small!

She’s 8 now, 16 hands and about 1400 lbs. This is the beginning of our second season foxhunting and we’re both hooked!

During the rest of the year, while we’re waiting for hunting season to begin, I’ll take her to some dressage shows (1st level) and maybe a 2-phase or two, but my main focus is on getting and keeping her fit so she can keep up with the hounds!

You must be crawling out of your skin waiting for your season to begin!

You’re welcome!

What a great history you have with your mare!! She looks right at home in the hunt field with you, taylor made!

In my backyard is a 2 1/2 year old whom I have known since he was a size 42 folicle on his dam’s right ovary. My goal for him is hunting and trail riding. He just did two weeks at a hunting friends house getting backed. The report- all A’s. My friend reported back that said colt is light years ahead of any young horse he has ridden- and he has started a gad-zillion horses, yeah! I’ve ponyed the colt through hell and high water, clutz/bomb proofed him and generally “de-horsed” him to the best of my middle aged abilities in preparation of making him a “golden years” horse for me.

We did a 20 minute trail ride last weekend and my young guy walked, trotted and cantered along like a 19 year old veteran field hunter that you would put your grandmother on- except my youngin still doesn’t have steering. I don’t know what had me more slackjawed- the excellent behavior of my youngin or how damn cool a rider my friend is loping on barely broke colt who does two straight strides, one bendy stride, back to straight…:stuck_out_tongue:

It’s a long journey, but raising a horse from a foal on up can be so rewarding! She is 100% taylor made to be my horse. Her nickname is “Muggles”. She give hugs. I’m totally in love with her.

You’re youngster sounds awesome! And to have owned the dam as well, how neat. I think I recall a post you wrote about his desensitizing training. That’s the way to go! You end up with a horse that is so worldly, nothing phases them. It’s wonderful, really.

Stearing does come later on… I don’t think Daatje really had that down until year 5!

Have you posted photos of your young man? I’d love to see him.

Thank you so much for sharing your pics, what a lovely day!

beautiful photos, beautiful couple

she’s lovely and you two look great together.
