Hi all
I am thinking I would like my horse to get exposed to hunting. Looking for recommendations for trainers that do this type of training/exposure. Anywhere from the Monmouth County to Fair Hill area. Thanks for the replies!

Me too! I am looking for one here in lexington Ky…so far I havent heard of any.
DIY advise
lots of up hill and down dale esp very controlled slow down hill trot & canter to build the anterior muscles needed to slow and stop. lots of water crossing lots of riding in groups. quick sharp correction of any kicking behavior.
then roading and cubbing
do not do as I did
first flight, first hunt [for the horse too]
I made it unscathed but it was luck
Leslie, you might try calling Maggie Wright at Champagne Run in Lexington. She’s an active foxhunter and gives lessons, and if she can’t help you I think she might be able to recommend someone who can. I’ve ridden with her and like her teaching style–very friendly but also goal-oriented.
Anyone have a recommendation, please?
Is Amwell Valley too far?
Working Girl,
The best way to get your horse exposed (learned this from experience last year) is to take him/her to a Foxhunting Clinic, followed by Roading with a Hunt.
The clinic will give your horse an opportunity to see hounds in action, and Roading will give you and your horse a chance to stay behind hounds while they jog about without having to get too close (unless you’re ready to move around the field).
Afterwards, when Cubbing begins, your horse will hopefully be fine with hounds and then you’ll get to enjoy some fabulous hunting.
It took my mare (OK, me) almost the entire season to COMPLETELY chill out, and not worry about overtaking the field every, EVERY moment. I was hooked from day one (despite my mare’s trembling for a number of weeks…), signed up as a full member by the Landowner’s Picnic - and I’ve made a great number of new friends (I mean family) that extends all over this great continent!
Our Hunt Clinic is on July 24th in Stockton, NJ. P.M. me if you’d like further details.
Good luck to you!
I have no idea where you are located.
Hounds ~thank you
Hounds, Thank you I will check into her:)
Hi Pleasant Meadows
Where are you located and also AVH? I took a quick look ath both websites and did not see an address. I cannot come to the July 24th clinic as I work weekends. But perhaps in the fall when things slow down here. thanks
Hi Pleasant Meadow
Oh, just took a look where Stockon is, you are up north! thanks!
Working girl,
AVH is not the only hunt that hosts clinics. Look at the mfha website (http://www.mfha.org/hunts-geolist.html) for the hunts in your area, look at their websites, and contact the hunt secretary.
Although you’re looking for someone to expose your horse for you, it’s a viable option to go to a clinic and perhaps try roading. What are you concerned about with your horse?
If you are willing to go a little further South of Fair Hill, I work at a training farm that specializes in foxhunters in Green Spring Valley Hunt country. PM if you want information.
