Hunter barns in/near Houston?

Hi all, I’m likely moving to Houston soon and would love some suggestions on barns (I took a look at some of the older threads but most seemed fairly outdated). I’m an adult and will be moving with my current horse who does the adult hunters/AOs/local derbies in New England.

I’ll be working some long hours, so it needs to be a barn where a pro can ride her most weekdays. Excellent horse care with good instruction/riding is the top priority. I’d love a barn that has adults who ride and that does some of the bigger nearby shows. However, I am unlikely to have the vacation time to travel far for shows, so a program that requires extensive showing would probably not be a good fit.

I’ll be working in downtown Houston but don’t have housing yet so open to any direction. Thanks!

Many of the barns in the Houston area are in flood zones so whatever you find ask about their evacuation plans for hurricanes and flash flooding

We moved from Kentucky to north Texas decades ago, I remember it took our horses about eighteen months to fully adapt to the change. The first “winter”, they started putting on a Kentucky winter coat then shed that out pretty quickly. We have two horses that came from North Dakota they look at what we call winter then start chanting sissy , sissy

Houston has many trainers that would fit your description, almost all are west to north (7 to 2 o’clock) of downtown. A good place to start is THJA.org. All shows in Houston are at GSWEC (great southwest) which is in Katy area. Surprisingly Texas does not have a lot of show venues. Basically Katy, and Tyler (a few smaller shows in Waco and Fort Worth is trying), so many / most AA barns travel to shows in January and in the summer months (June -Sept). A covered arena is pretty important (imo) due to the rain in the winter and heat in the summer.

JNL Stables might be a good fit for what you are looking for. Mostly adults and shows in Katy with a couple out of state trips per year. A number of adults are also very happy at Pine Hollow.

I ride at Quantum Hunters & Jumpers. It’s located adjacent to Memorial Park (at 610 & I-10) so it’s really convenient if you’re working downtown (also where I work). They go to the shows in Katy at Great Southwest; I love it because we get to do some nice shows without a lot of traveling. And if you don’t want to go to a show, they still have trainers who teach the weekend lessons. There’s a good amount of adults who ride there.

I agree with the three mentioned, It will really depend on where you want to live. I’m a working adult and am at Pine Hollow but I’ve got working adult friends at JNL and Memorial Park. All three of these have a solid clientele that have been there for years. All three are in different parts of the area.
Your best bet is to check them out. Happy to answer questions.

Not sure where you are moving from but driving 30 to 45 minutes to get anywhere is normal. embrace it. ha! I say that as when my parents visit they are always horrified that anywhere takes longer then 10 minutes. They live in a small beach town in FL so no comparison
