Hunter barns within an hour-hour and a half of Atlanta

So sorry to do this, the searches I did only brought up older threads so I was hoping for some more recent suggestions. Looking for:

-large turn out spaces, preferably with overnight turn out options
-success at A-AA shows
-traveling to Ocala or WEF not necessary but would be a plus

Thanks for any help!

North side or south side of Atlanta?

Lee Hughes - Promenade Farm !

Or east or west for that matter!! With more information about what part of town you will be living in OP, any budget target, whether you are interested in a barn with more juniors vs adults or vice versa, you will get better suggestions.

Any direction! Looking for a barn first, permanent housing for the people after the horses are settled. Absolutely does not matter about the other clientele, solely concerned with the original requests. All situations are within budget, so long as the barn is hunter-focused, goes to A-AA rated shows [out of state is fine], and has large turn out options.

Thanks again!

Lots of options. I’d start with Terry Brown at Showcase, Ltd in Canton. I think she checks all your boxes.

You will have the most options on the north side of town - Roswell/Alpharetta/Canton areas. Julie Curtin at New Vintage is great with the hunters and goes to WEF, indoors, etc . . . (but is on the road a ton - does not show locally much). Lauren Kissel/Janet Salem at Patchwork and Heather Steinman at HMS are two other A circuit programs worth looking at. Heather does a lot of jumpers, but puts great flatwork on her horses and still rides a lovely hunter round and has some nice hunters in the barn. I don’t know who does night turnout and who doesn’t, so that would definitely be something you’d have to inquire about.

I think that night turn out is going to be your challenge. The problem with #2/3 on your list is they usually come with a healthy dose of not putting horses out if there is the remotest chance of them getting wet (or on a less dramatic scale, the possibility of thunder/lightning). The challenge with that in the South and in the summer is very few nights meet that criteria, a night time shower is almost always in the forecast (or enough that turnout is erratic). I’m sure some do, but it is not the norm, for sure.

Mine, on the other hand, have been proven not to melt. (although to be fair, they could go in their stalls. They don’t, but they could. Also in the 30+ years I’ve been doing night turn out, the stall option is pretty recent).

Depending on the results, you might need to consider a private barn and possibly ship in to a trainer for lessons if #1 holds a disproportionate weight on your list.

It’s a smaller program but Flyover Farms in Conyers with Sarah Ward Rupp has lots of turnout! I know they do some rated showing out of state as well (Aiken, Tryon)

You will not find better care than Jenny Gelb at Hunter’s Glen in Alpharetta, but she has mostly jumpers. She trains hunters as well, but more jumper focused. The horses go out overnight in the summer and the facility has nice amenities.

Julie’s horses rarely, if ever, go out.

Megan O’Dwyer with Shamrock Manors is great. She has 2 locations.

@Perfect10 a friend currently boards with Julie at New Vintage and her horse gets regular turnout (I have not asked how many hours). So, the amount may vary by which horses, but it does not seem to be a blanket no turnout rule.

@oceanmountain I looked at Megan’s Alpharetta farm and she said she does not do night turnout, she rotates her horses in the available turnouts during the day.

So, the OP would definitely need to ask about how much turnout the horse would get at both places (well, any places really!) and decide whether it met their needs.

Three Bears Farm definitely does night turnout, and does a mix of local GHJA shows and A/AA shows, including Tryon, Aiken and Ocala. So that would be another option, and it has an indoor.

Melinda Sise at MDS Farm and Ann Sherbourne at A&H Show Stables are two additional Alpharetta options.

And Michael Newman took over Atlanta Hunt Club, but I’m not sure of the turnout situation there. But it would fit the bill as a hunter barn that does A/AA shows and goes to Florida I would think.

If you come out east there’s Pecan Lane in Watkinsville and Winter Haven in Social Circle. All have great A-AA programs and lots of turn out.

Yes, Julie always did turn out so I can’t believe that has changed, but they are small (lovely) paddocks and I’m pretty sure extended hours t/o (day or night) is probably not typical.

It is tough, keeping pastures in good shape with 12+ hours grazing means you have to have lots of land and land north of Atlanta is expensive so the people who DO do that kind of turnout have either owned it for a very long time and/or are well outside the OTP “traditional” limits. OOTP as it were.

Honestly, Three Bears is the only one I can think of that mostly fit the bill (but, as evidenced by my profile pic, I am a bit removed from my h/j roots these days so I could easily be missing someone). But I think Three Bears is worth a visit, it is a great facility.
