Hunter Jump Designs and Ideas

I’m planning on redoing the jumps at my barn and potentially building some new ones. Anyone have a favorite hunter fence/design they love? Share them below! Please no silly or colorful suggestions, looking for hunter derby type fences.

Also, does anyone know the best type of paint to use? Planning on sanding off the old stuff, repainting, and sealing with some sort of topcoat.

I like fuzzy green carpet poles and boxes. That would be pretty easy to do, no paint required! (I think that’s a hunter style, no?)

I dont know what the best paint is, but the worst is Dutch boy. Painted a giant set with it, and the results are good… now. I doubt they will last as they scuffed and dinged getting put in my truck bed. YMMV.

No suggestions on fence types as I’m coming from eventer land, but perhaps a solid stain would last longer than paint. I know that Behr has a solid stain base, and I believe Home Depot can mix up any color you like.

Like IrishDeclan said, stain looks so stunning, is easy and lasts a long time. We did that along with evergreen fill in boxes and new rolltops with faux grass and it really made everything look so polished without too much effort. I find light flower boxes to be great additions. Easy to change out flower colors depending on the season and can be used as skinnies for flat work. We also utilize any birch branches we can find. My favorite part is everything is cost effective.

No real recommendations on paint brands, but last time I was painting jumps and jump poles, there was a guy at Home Depot who had just repainted all the jumps for his daughter in law’s fancy barn (and they looked GOOD). He told me to paint everything with a primer first, let it dry, and then paint over it with the colors you want, with a High Gloss paint. It looks nicer and the paint lasts much longer. For some hunter-type, more natural looking colors, though, a good wood stain looks really nice and doesn’t need the primer.

I agree with a good stain. Some ideas:

  1. Stained coop with stained poles above it - great for oxers
  2. Turf wrapped pole with bright white filler (like lattice or a plank)
  3. Gotta have some birch painted poles, what is a derby without the birch?

It’s more about the brush and hay fillers. You can make any old poles derby like with good filler and a couple planks. Add in a roll top or coop for extra visual aspect. Just keep the poles birch, rusty red, bright white, and natural stained.
