I’ve been offered a new job and we are contemplating a move to the New Orleans area. My 11 yr old daughter has a horse and we’d be looking for a boarding and training barn. Does anyone have any suggestions? Ideally it would be a barn that went to a few A shows per year. TIA
Equest Farm is located in City Park in New Orleans. It’s the only place I would want to board my horse in the city. If you don’t mind a drive (about an hour), there are a bunch of nice places north of the lake (Covington, Folsom, etc) with more room for turnout and trails.
Thanks. I am not opposed to driving, and may end up on the north shore because it looks like the schools are better out there than those in the city. My daughter rides 2-3 times a week so I’d prefer to a bit closer to the barn and I can deal with the commute to work. I really want a place that has decent turnout as that’s what our horse is used to.
Hi, I lived and worked in New Orleans for years. The only decent place is Equest Farm in City Park in New Orleans. However, with that being said, it caters to the wealthy and is not under $1000 per month. There is limited turnout and honestly, the owners are a little crazy. However, they take good care of the horses, use good feed, clean the stall twice/day, have stall fans, etc. I’m not sure what trainer is there now, they go through them constantly because of the owners. They always have college kids training, but the head trainer changes all the time. They will nickel and dime you for every service, but if you can afford it, not a bad option. Just beware of what you are getting yourself into and read the contract carefully. They have a covered arena and you used to have access to some grass riding. They schedule vet and farrier for you. They used to have a boarder arena vs. a lesson arena so you did not have to compete with lessons for riding space.
There is Magnolia Stables on the west bank, but there is NO turnout except in round pens. The barn and arena is decent. It’s really expensive for what it is. There is Tavia in St. Rose. I’ve heard decent things, but again turnout is an issue.
Your best bang for your buck is to board them on the northshore, but the traffic can be hellacious. If horses are your thing, I would rather live and board on the northshore and drive to work, then work and live in New Orleans and drive to the horse. The property values and schools are better on the northshore anyway.
Stay away from Cascade Stables at all cost!
Hi! I’m Breezy Sambola (assistant trainer/rider) of Sambola Show Stables. We are located on the northshore. It sounds like we are just the place you are looking for! Feel free to contact Diane Sambola (head trainer/owner) at (985)966-0732. We would love to hear from you. Feel free to checkout my Facebook and Instagram accounts under Breezy Sambola to see more about us.
Meghan at Equest Farm is top class. She’s really put a lot of time and effort into fixing the place up, revamping the programs, and she’s there for the long haul. I couldn’t recommend her more, and she’s the only person and facility Id recommend IN the city. Though there are plenty in Covington/Folsom.
You will have more options on the Northshore.
Definitely reach out to Breezy that just posted. They are great people!
