Hunter/Jumper/Eventing barns near Durham NC

Hi COTH! I finally signed up for the forums so I could ask this very important question

Does anyone have any recommendations for boarding barns with a hunter/jumper or eventing focus (basically I’d like to have some jumps on the property, so even dressage barns would be fine if they have some small jumps to pop over every so often), in the Durham, NC area? I’m working at Duke West Campus, and living on the northwest-ish side of Durham, and would like to stay within 30 minutes of that area – ideally closer but would do maybe 45 for the right facility. My budget is a tiny bit flexible, would prefer around $600 but definitely no more than $800. For the perfect fit I could maybe do more if they have someone on-site to lease my horse.

My horse is an older warmblood jumper gelding, mostly retired from showing due to my schedule/finances but still in 5-6 days a week of fairly heavy work (like 30-45 minutes per ride, unless it’s a walk hack, which could be up to 1.5 hr).

Here’s my ideal but I’m definitely flexible on a good portion of these items:
-stall board or mostly 24/7 pasture but with an option for my own stall when needed/wanted
-quality/well-maintained facility with reasonable amenities (i.e. tack room, wash stall, board fencing, stall fans, not disgusting or run down)
-horse NEEDS to be fed in the stall or individual turnout (slow eater and will walk away from his food before coming back to finish later ~ yes his teeth have been checked!)
-HIGH QUALITY hay and grain, no restrictions on hay or grain amount (or reasonable fees if overages)
-ideally would be able to bring in and/or pick my own hay/grain if barn’s supplies aren’t working
-would prefer full-time staff on-site (i.e. night check, training/exercising services easily available, etc)
-good footing, well-lit, large arena that’s regularly maintained (watered/dragged)
-trail access, fields for hacking out in, etc.
-ability to use my own farrier/vet, or a quality team chosen by barn management
-I don’t really need a trainer regularly with this horse at this point but wouldn’t mind taking a lesson once or twice a month and would definitely pay for services on a weekly basis (mostly lunging in Pessoa rig but the occasional training ride)

Hopefully this doesn’t come off as too extra or neurotic – I tried to cover most of the questions I’ve seen people get asked when they come on here looking for facility suggestions. Like I said, I am actually pretty flexible on everything except the stuff that pertains to my horse’s health (feed quality, etc).

I really appreciate anyone who read all of this and has suggestions for me! On a limited time frame and a bit desperate here

I am moving to Durham at the end of August, and was able to go out there in the spring and look at a bunch of boarding barns. In my estimation, the best one I looked at was Equiventure/Quail Roost Farm: http://qr.inetogether.net, and I believe it ticks all your boxes. (Although you’d want to reach out to them to confirm.)

I hope this helps!

Thanks – I went and looked at them yesterday. It’s definitely a gorgeous facility and one of my top picks at the moment. Are you moving your horse in at the end of August?

Fair warning, my friend was looking to switch barns recently and really struggled finding a place. A lot of them are full. You may want to start getting on wait lists ASAP and it may be the case that a few of your criteria won’t be met with the first place you find that has an opening. Good luck!

I can’t help you, but welcome to the area! I work at Duke also, and keep my horse very south. Good luck finding a place and welcome! There are several eventing barns in your “northwest of Durham” area.

Crescent Farm in Hillsborough should also meet your requirements. Good boarders, owner has loads of experience, nice amenities with plenty of pasture space, covered dressage arena and 2 other outdoors, fields for riding, miles of trails, etc.
