Hunter Jumper Farms near Winston-Salem, NC?

Hello all!

We are potentially moving from CO to the Winston-Salem, NC area. Although others have posted similar threads to this, they are a bit older, and I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.

I have an AA jumper gelding, and we are trying to move up to the AOs. I need to find a show barn with a solid jumper trainer somewhere in the remote vicinity of W-S. And although I fully understand the cost of keeping a horse, $900-950/month for board is out of reach. So that eliminates Clouds Harbor and Tori Hope (which both sound beautiful, by the way).

Any suggestions? Maybe facilities that welcome outside trainers (and the name of good trainers who might travel)?

Thank you SOOO much!!

Hello! I don’t know of any jumper trainers in that area. Harold Chopping is just over an hour away in Southern Pines. Kyle Timm in in Apex. You may want to find a good quality boarding barn and plan on shipping out for lessons. You can also post on the NCHJA Facebook page. We do hunters so I might be forgetting about a really good jumper person in WS!

Well, welcome to the area if the move happens!

I think your best option may be to find a farm that allows outside trainers. Not sure if Irish Oaks has a jumper trainer or allows outside trainers. There is also TTC which is a large, well run, family farm in Mocksville that’s right off I-40. They have schooling shows and outside trainers are welcome.

Hope this helps!

shea’smom has a farm in the area. You might pm her for recommendations.

Just moved from WS this summer. I was boarding at Peacock Acres in Pfafftown just outside city limits of Winston…and just around the corner from Irish Oaks.

Most of the riders there are hunters, but there are a few who do the jumpers, though not as big as the AOs at the moment. It’s a really great group of people…a mix of pony kids and adults.

Kristi Watson is the in-house trainer, and she does a great job. The BO rides hunters and shows with the Towells. From time to time the farm hosts clinics there…I believe Jack came around Thanksgiving.

The facility is very nice, and board is a good deal compared to the rest of the farms that show at the level you want in the area. They have a huge outdoor, lots of open space to ride in with a few small XC jumps and tons of trails. I can PM you the BOs phone number if you’re interested. Not sure if there is a waiting list right now or not.

Good luck…we miss Winston a ton! I wasn’t the biggest fan when I first moved there, but after about a year and a half I fell in love. Especially now that I’m back living in Oklahoma. Ha! Let me know if you need any non-horsey recommendations for the area!

ETA: At the time that I left, no one cared if you went and took lessons with other trainers. They don’t micromanage their clients to that level.

Hi,

I was in the same boat as you when I moved to Winston-Salem. Luckily, I was an active member on the NCHJA circuit for several years prior to moving here so I made a decision based on all of the trainers that I know. I can give you the scoop and let you know what I did. You’re in a tough situation because of the level of riding that you do. Most of the barns in the area don’t teach/compete at that level and the ones that do are all around 1,000 a month for board. Sending you a PM now.
