Hi all,
I’m looking for recommendations for barns in the NYC area. At the moment, I’m just looking for lessons - I don’t own a horse - but eventually I’m looking to own & board nearby. I’m based in Brooklyn and have a car, but want to keep my commute under 1 hour 15 min each way. Would love a barn that has access to trails and/or a cross country field, but regular hunter/jumper barns ok too.
I also have a crummy work schedule and my days off are Sunday-Monday, so I need a barn that’s open on Mondays.
For context -
I got back into riding about 4 years ago after a long hiatus. I’ve never been very competitive but I take training seriously. I work full time in person in the city and ride 2-3x per week.
I was driving to an eventing barn about two hours outside NYC that I loved, but the commute wasn’t tenable. I eventually found a trainer I liked at Old Westbury Equestrian Center and I followed her to Stanhope, but she’s sold off all her lesson horses. I was leasing a horse at Stanhope for 6 months but I’d ideally I’m trying to spend the next year straightening out my work schedule and saving up so I can get my own horse. So I’m looking for two things -
Short term:
A barn nearby that has a solid lesson program for an intermediate-advanced rider looking to jump around 2’6” and eventually move up.
Long term:
A barn nearby where people have had a positive experience boarding, offers at least 6 hours of turnout a day, is within 1 hr 15 min of Brooklyn, and basic board is around $1500 a month (is that wishful thinking?). Stanhope is an option, but curious about other recommendations.
