Hunter/Jumper Trainer or Boarding Facility in Georgia

Hello! I’m moving to the Marietta Georgia area in a few weeks and need to start my search for a new trainer/barn. My horse will be moving in a few months so there’s time to do some tours. Most of the forums I found on this topic seem to be quite old, so I’m starting a fresh one to get a take on the current scene. I haven’t decided exactly what type of situation I need yet, so I’m currently looking for either a full care boarding facility, or a full training H/J program.

Ideally the barn commute would be under 90 minutes. However, having lived in both Seattle and Los Angeles for many years I understand that traffic can rapidly destroy this goal. Fantastic care and a well managed facility are worth a commute for me. Budget is healthy and adjustable for the right situation, but good value for the money is also a consideration.

My horse is a relatively easy keeper chestnut mare. She has her moments, but mostly enjoys napping her her stall. She was showing in the 3’ hunters prior to an injury. Eventually I’d like to get back to that and see what else we can do.

Any H/J trainer recommendations? And are there any top care boarding options out there? Anything else I should know about the horse community in Georgia?

Julie Curtin/New Vintage is relatively close to Marietta I believe. She’s on the road a lot and does all the big shows if you are looking for that type of program. No idea on board costs but she is good people and her horses look impecable at the shows so well run program for sure.

First, from Marietta you will have no trouble staying under 90 minutes on a commute. You should look NW of Atlanta, and possibly as far east as Alpharetta. Board costs for the good h/j training barns in these areas only vary by a few hundred per month at most (for the show barns, full board will be around $1000-1100, generally, plus requirements of a partial or full training package). Some of the biggest variables are (i) is there an indoor or a covered (this is now a must-have on my list because of the amount of rain we get); (ii) what’s the turnout situation and (iii) what type of show schedule you are looking for (ie, how much time on the road, and do you want big national shows, local/regional A’s, or a mix of local A’s and local GHJA shows). Those factors will really narrow down your options. For example, Julie Curtin is at WEF for 12 weeks, but a number of other barns spend 2 weeks in Ocala and/or a couple of weeks in Gulfport, so the best suggestions for you will depend on a little more information on what you are looking for.

Thank you for the info! I’ve provided responses to your items below. Hopefully this helps to narrow down some options for training programs.

i) I’m a big fan of an indoor arena. My work schedule can be a little hectic, so if I can get to the barn I don’t want rain to prevent me from riding. Great footing is a MUST. I’d probably pick footing over an indoor if it came down to it, but I’m hoping it doesn’t.

ii) Turnout is low on my list of priorities. “Turnout” in SoCal is a 24’x24’ pen. Anything bigger than that is great. However, my mare goes a little bonkers in a big field. Something big enough to stretch her legs but small enough to control the chaos would be ideal. She is also perfectly content in her stall though so she can always keep camping out there if that’s the best option.

iii) I don’t mind if the trainer is showing on the road a lot as long as the home care is solid when I can’t attend. My show schedule will probably float between the GHJA shows and the local/regional A’s. My horse is coming back from an injury so I’ll need to play it by ear regarding how competitive we can get at the moment. If everything aligns I’d love to tag along to WEF or other winter shows, but if not then I’d need staying local to be an option.

Let me know if this helps or if you need more info! Honestly since I’m not in the know on the local horse industry scene I’m still pretty flexible and entertaining all options. I’m sure I’ll start to get a little more picky once I get there and can look around.

By indoor, you mean covered? No one has real indoor rings here.

I’m sure you’ve already thought of this, but it bears repeating. This would be a good time to get your mare caught up on vaccinations appropriate to where she will be moving. You’re going to love GA!

@mroades Yes, covered works. I’m using the term “indoor” loosely.

@jonem004 Most definitely! Anything unique to Georgia that I should be aware of regarding vet care? She’s content where she’s at right now so I have time to finish off a long to-do list before she moves.

A former student from my barn is riding with Terry Brown at Showcase Ltd. in Canton, GA. Nice big covered. She is from northern Calif. and reports that she’s thrilled with the immaculate care and instruction. Apparently it is a very friendly, supportive barn as well.

Terry at Showcase, Julie at New Vintage, Janet/Lauren at Patchwork are all good options in that area. Michael at Aubrey Hill (Brad Spragg’s old Atlanta Hunt Club property) is another option as well, he runs a good program.

Patchwork (Janet Salem/Lauren Kissel), New Vintage (Julie Curtin), MDS Farm (Melinda Sise), HMS Stables (Heather Steinman) and Three Bears (Dawn Hersey) would all be good options, if they have stalls (unless something changed very recently, I believe Three Bears is full), with either true indoor arenas or covered arenas. All of those have websites and/or Facebook pages that will give you a preliminary look to see what you might like. A&H in Alpharetta (Ann Sherbourne) is great too but she does not have a covered or an indoor.

Janet at Patchwork was once a regular poster here at COTH. Not sure if she’s still active but her barn has a very solid reputation.

Three Bears Farm matches every one of the criteria you listed. The facility is top notch and run well by nice people. They have three arenas (two outdoor and a true indoor) all with excellent footing. Outdoors are a sand fiber combo and the indoor is wax coated sand. The also do a combination of local GHJA and A circuit shows so lots of options there.

I spent the weekend at Elite at Chatt Hills and my trainer and I were so impressed with Michael’s coaching style and even the rides he gave his horses in the divisions on Thursday and Friday. He was really kind with the horses and had such a nice demeanor. My trainer is from Florida (I know he is, too, but they aren’t from the same area) so she’s not Atlanta-based but he really stood out to us. He had a nice, relaxed energy and a kindness about him.

HOLLY HUGO VIDAL!!

I’m a big fan of Heather Steinman at HMS Jumpers in Canton. Nice person and good pro.

Patchwork Farm sounds like it might be a great fit for you! They have a lovely indoor and outdoor ring with good footing. They attend a mix of local GHJA shows, Atlanta-area A/AA shows as well as indoors and Devon. Also, they have a great rehab program with a treadmill and theraplate to get your mare back in show-ready shape! It’s a fantastic program to be in with great training and a wonderful staff.

I’ve ridden there for years and highly recommend!

Holly Hugo-Vidal, now at Arbor Hill Farm in Canton. Spectacular facility and the training and care don’t get any better.

My friend just moved her horse to Arbor Hill and she LOVES it!! She’s training with Daniel Pizarro and is really happy with the farm and the great care that her horse is receiving. The Boggios are so kind!

Wow she’s still around? I remember her from when she was married to Victor, must be 40-50 years ago!
