Hunter Show Coat for Wide Shoulders/Big Arms, with Stretch, <$200?

I just ordered an RJ classics Sydney II in a size 12R and found it fit perfectly through body and bust, but my arms barely fit in the sleeves and it pulls badly through the shoulders. My previous show coat was also an RJ classics (10R, Extreme/orange label), had the same issue to a degree but was stretchy enough that you wouldn’t really notice. I don’t have that much of a budget this time round, which leads to me seek recommendations for:

  • softshell coat (washable is a must) with stretch
  • in Navy with styling appropriate for AA hunters (I’m on the conservative side in terms of show clothes, and curvy to boot)
  • with enough room for a girl with shoulders and arms
  • must be available for near-immediate shipment (first show next Sunday…)

Somebody help me?

Go up a size in the RJ to fit your shoulders and have a tailor shape the body for a custom fit. Most tailors can do it in a few days.

I know some hunters take issue with the brightness of the blue (I promise it’s still very much a navy), but the smartpak piper coat ticks off these boxes. I also have huge shoulders, some upper arm heft and found the piper fits well. The arms are even a little long! It’s definitely stretchy and washable. I got mine on super sale for $35, but I don’t think regular price is much more than $100, if even that.

You might try Kerrits. It sounds like we might be built similarly, and I’ve found the cut of their coats to be very forgiving in the shoulder and upper arms, while still looking tailored through the body. I also really like the way this coat drapes; it looks very much like a traditional fabric hunt coat, whereas many of the soft shells are clingy. I have an earlier version of their Competitor’s Coat.
