Hunting for the rest of us.....

How would a kinda-fat asthmatic do?

I once went on hound exercise with the Waldingfield Beagles & nearly croaked. Those suckers are fast. I’m used to following our beagles on horseback! I was seriously gasping and wheezing trying not to get lost in the woods following them.

R we on for tomorrow?? Four inches of snow in the region, uh, cancelled EVERYthing else and I find myself able to come join you guys!! Hope we’re on.

R we on for tomorrow? FOUR INCHES of snow in the region cancelled, well, everything else, so I find myself able to join you guys. Hope we’re on!!

Jiminy Christmas I just got home from a party. Got stuck in a ditch - oh that was just peachy. Roads in the area look to be ok other than some spots here and there (and obviously stay away from the road I got stuck on):D.

Looks like we’re on for tomorrow but will be letting our COTH posse know for sure tomorrow am. (and will also give directions)

Bring shoes to change into (for the tea) and dress warm!

One day i shall go a hunting on foot or riding … tis officially added to my horsey list to do.

Have fun tomorrow and don’t get stuck in any ditches!

See u at x: thanks so much for sharing these wonderful pics.

I grew up with a Basset and have always wanted to go bassetting. One joyful Basset is positively infectious - before now I could only imagine what a pack of joyful Bassets would be like.

That joy is palpable in these photos. Hope to experience it in person some day.

Well, girls and boys - we’re hunting today!

Be there or be square.

For the folks who can’t make it (whaddya doing living so far away?) - we’ll be thinking of you as we freeze our butts off trudging through the snow.

Oops - gotta remember to pack my flask. Today feels like… cherry brandy. Yes, it’s a cherry brandy kind of day.

Tally ho!

It’s 34 degrees out there. Probably slightly less in the countryside Try to keep safe.

Brrr. It was frosty cold (my toes are still frozen) but there were a lot of CotH ladies in their full regalia. I posted pix to my facebook page - if you’re not my ‘friend’ search me by Betsy Burke Parker. I took pix of the whole gang.
Tons of sport, great hound work. I think Lesson 13 had a ball.
We missed you Lex.

I went out to hunt with the Ashland pack today courtesy of JSwan. Met SeeUatX who is indeed the Queen of the bunny photo op (I got not a single shot of bunnies though I saw a few), Wateryglen (I did manage to get her photo), Hunter’sRest and Cammie as well as JSwan were all in attendance.

We were blessed with about 5 inches of snow and a beautiful sunny day and a spectacularly scenic venue. It appears to me if you aren’t skinny when you start basset hunting you will be by the time you finish. Those folks ran in circles for about 3 hours chasing bunnies which raced through the woods like a blur.

Afterwards we were treated to a tea at the lovely home of a club member.

I will put a few pics up on my flickr site in the next couple of days (and if anyone goes back and event or two and looks at my horse pics and can tell me what color that horse that I’ve labeled a liver chestnut really is I’d appreciate it because I think maybe I got that wrong.)

If you were at the hunt but don’t want to be identified or can’t stand seeing pictures of yourself, please let me know that too. I got a great shot of Waterglen, JSwan and SeeUatX but won’t post if people are photoshy.

Many many thanks to JSwan for extending the invite! I was smiling all day and really enjoyed learning about the hunting of hounds (now I only need like 100 more lessons on the horse and maybe I can do the mounted version)!

Oh, I forgot to mention as we left the field a red fox ran across the road and onto the neighbor’s property! I think it might be a sign that there’s foxhunting in my future! For sure we tired out the bunnies for him so he should have had happy hunting if he made his way over to the property we had just hunted.

Had a truly wonderful time meeting everyone on Sunday. JSwan, SeeUatX, Wateryglen, Lesson13 and Hunter’s Rest were all lovely to hang out with, and it was so nice to spend the afternoon with horse people! Many, many thanks to JSwan for extending the invite to me.

Bassets were very entertaining, and it was interesting to see them work up close. There seemed to be rabbits everywhere, along with deer and a fox. It was a beautiful fixture, and the tea afterward was quite nice as well.

I survived the bitter cold and the first snow I’ve seen in 14 years, so don’t let the weather scare anyone away who wants to go out with this group!

I’m definitely in again next time I get back home for a visit.

I’m so glad everyone had a good time, and I hope to see all of you out again soon.

Evidently we had a record number of views - someone mentioned 16 views.

I love the photos, lesson13. Good luck with your lessons and I’m sure you’ll reach your goal. Your instructor is terrific. You can post a photo of me if you want - if you got a decent shot of me I’m pretty impressed - I’m not exactly a beauty queen.

rivenoak - if a middle aged fat lady with a freshly herniated disc can do this sport (and whip in!) you would be just fine. If you’re out this way - look me up and I’ll take you hunting.

Keep warm, everyone!

Wow, love the pics and stories! I am a huge Basset aficianado! Basseting is def not seen much (if at all that I know of) around here in North Cal. Makes me miss the East Coast even more!
Hopefully there will be more pics and stories to come!

Seeing this thread bumped up reminded to post my photos from the December 6th outing:

What a great day hunting it was! It was such a pleasure to meet Lesson13 and Cammie and to see HuntersRest again. I did get a few pictures of everyone, so please do let me know if you’re uncomfortable having your photo visible in the album and I will gladly remove it for you.

It was an incredibly lucky day for us as there was an abundance of bunnies. I was very fortunate to get a few decent photos of them and still grin about it, even though it’s been almost a month ago. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to get my hunting fix lately, due in one part to the horrible weather and also because I am still recuperating from pneumonia. My horses are utterly thrilled about my absence from the barn and not being able to put them to work. I, on the other hand, am less than happy about this turn of events. :sigh:

Anyhoo, as soon as I’m up to again, I’ll be out there with my camera ready for action. Again, a huge thanks to JSwan for introducing me to this amazing sport!

Fun, fun, fun!!

Man that red coated Star chick is one good-lookin’ woman I gotta say!!! And notice all her pics are with her mouth open…talking…And my doesn’t that Jess chick look thin! And that solo picture of Lesson 13!! Nice hair! Hunters Rest has a big lens!
But the rabbit pictures totally rock! Especially against the snow AND you got him in extension AND collection! Wow!! And our Bleu deGascogne bassets are so easy to see against white snow too! You are officially declared a big deal nature photog! We bow in humble admiration!
:D:D:D:D

And sorry for seeing that see.u has been a sickie! Call me! I got da cure!

this has been fun reading.

the most tired I have been in my whole life was after going beagling on foot in the late 60s. and I was young and fit at the time.

Oh man that looks like so much fun! I’d love to go out sometime and see what a real basset can do, as mine just lies in the sunshine all day

Come on out! We practically hunt right next to your house!

PM me if you want to come out as my guest. Hopefully see u at x is feeling better and will be out this Sunday too.

Yeeeehaw!!!

I went out with Ashland Bassets yesterday! Still some iced up snow on ground in shaded areas making footing “challenging” but more caloric burning I gotta say! Good time for a hiking stick right now. We had 5 different rabbits and lotsa great houndwork. So much easier to see both with snow. We got 2 more inches this morning so it’ll be good viewing Sunday when we have plans to hunt Buckland Farm near Gainesville, Va. If it’s brutal; they won’t go of course. It’s the wind… Flat area so parking shouldn’t be problematic.
Pot luck tailgate (naturally I’d bring THAT up!!)afterwards.
YA’LL COME!!! Dress warm & you’d be surprised how walking warms you up. Good for foxhunters with the “stir crazies”!!

^ I totally am planning on coming on Sunday! I’ve been to Buckland several times for historic presevation events and the Casanova Point to Points. Lovely farm, and fantastic house!!
