I applied to a federal agency and interviewed with their New Orleans office. There aren’t any hunts on the MFHA recognized packs or the COTH Hunt rosters. Horrors! Does anyone know if perhaps there’s an unrecognized hunt in the state, or a hunt within a 3-hour drive of one of the neighboring states? (Clearly, I know nothing about the geography of the South)
A friend of mine (who is very very high up in a federal agency) was in NOLA for the last few years and I believe she hunted with Chulahoma. I think they are in Mississippi.
Obviously it depends what part of LA you will be in as far as what hunts may be closer to you
Thanks for the tip! From what I understand, the job is based in New Orleans with travel throughout LA and parts of MS and FL.
Ok then you would probably want to stick with south eastern Mississippi and southwestern Alabama for your checking things out.
I"ll have to ask my friend, when I hear back from her I"ll post again
I hunt with Chula Homa - we are in Canton/Pickens Ms just north of Jackson - about 3 hours from NOLA. We are now casting at 10 am so if you leave at 6 am, that should give you time to get tacked and settled before hunting. We are a small voluntary hunt. Friendly group. Our joint MFHA comes from NOLA to hunt. contact secretary@chulahomahunt.com for more info on hunting with us. Webpage is very slowly under development so that is kinda useless at the moment (I should know, I am supposed to be working on it…)
If you have trouble with that email address let me know cause I just set it up:sadsmile: Next hunt is New Years Day - one of the best of the year if you want my personal opinion.
Another hunt in AL is the Hardaway/Whitworth hunt. They are larger, have paid staff. Some people from NOLA area also hunt at the one in N. Fl - but I don’t remember the name of that hunt. The drive maybe further.

Fran- thanks for the info. I wouldn’t be moving to LA until next summer at the earliest though.
I haven’t spent much time in the South, so I’m checking things out to see if this is an area I’d like to relocate to. Why does my best shot at my dream job have to be 3 hours away from the nearest hunt? :sigh:
Linquest, I would envy you if you make the move. MY closest hunting opportunity is an 8 hour drive! Which doesn’t stop me of course- but does make for less frequent hunting!
Beverley- of course you would understand my pain  I go to school within an hour’s drive of 3 hunts. Figures–when I can’t afford it, plenty of opportunities to hunt; when I can, nothing around for hours.
They’ve been calling my references, we’ll see what happens!
cheese & crackers
OMG and you should hear us Virginians whine when we have to drive over an hour to an away meet…
“oooooooooo, it’s just sooooooo faaarrrr!!!”…
“oh my gawd! Do you KNOW how early I had to get up to get here today!!!”…
“oh my horse is such a mess cuz I had to get up so early to come today and it was still DARK outside! OMG!!!”…
“oh with gas prices being so high…I just couldn’t drive THAT far…!”
(My favorite…)" oh my husband just doesn’t want me to trailer THAT far; he gets worried about me going long distances!" (yea…right!
)
Finally got the phone call I’ve been waiting for!
Since there aren’t any hunts close by, can anyone recommend a barn near NOLA? Need schoolhorses, either dressage or h/j instruction. I’m guessing not enough dry land for an eventing scene…
Yay for you!
Yay! Good to hear when a Coth-er gets a real job, good job to support their horse habit! Some of us need one! ahem…
AND…you’ll be able to pay your exorbitant Snobbington dues too!!
congrats to Linquest! yay!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
Thanks for the Congrats
Wateryglen- I thought we were trading booze for dues?

If you’re down with the booze, you’re coming to the right place! And be prepared to gain at least 10 lbs. from all the amazing food. Get ready for a little bit of culture shock; NO is like another world. If you haven’t experienced Mardi Gras yet, just get ready. It’s wild. The city more or less shuts down for a month to party.
I know I gave you info on barns in the area, but I had to chime in about something else.
Just in case you’re concerned about it, LA is not all swamp. I only mention this because I went to school with a girl who came from up north, and she said she was terrifed to move here. Seems that in school, she was taught that all of LA was underwater and you had to travel by boat everywhere! She seriously thought she’d be riding the school boat, not the school bus. NO is close to some swampland, but it’s a city. Concrete, grass, roads, trees. You won’t bump into any alligators when you’re out walking your dog. Do try to order the alligator in a restaurant, though. It’s tasty. Really.
Seems like hunting just isn’t very popular around here. And even if it were, you’d have to travel away from NO because it’s all city. It’s either downtown or residential. There isn’t an ounce of open space.
Anyway, it’s a bizarre place, but chances are you’ll love it. Except for summer, but drinking helps.
