I hope you are able to find something close to you.

We used to have an active hunt club in the 70’s called Branchwater Hunt Club – had a blast hunting with them! It has been disbanded and inactive since then, unfortunately. The closest you will find is the Moreland Hunt Club and a few smaller ones in North Alabama (Tennessee Valley area) and around Columbus, Ga (Midland
Hunt Club) - which also used to hunt around Fitzpatrick, AL (near Montgomery, I think). Good luck – it is great fun!! I have some friends who hunt in N. AL if you need a contact.

Thanks everyone. Has anyone hunted with Mooreland out of Huntsville?

Can’t say enough good things about Mooreland – top notch masters, staff, hounds and country. Nice people who are serious about their hunting.

In first flight at least, Mooreland goes fast and long. Game is mostly coyote and their fixtures are very large and border the Tennessee River. A fit horse is a must, as the hunt covers some long distances. The amount of jumping depends on the fixture – some fixtures have virtually no fences, whereas others are heavily paneled.

If you go, make sure your horse has borium and/or road studs on its shoes. The rural north-Alabama tarmac roads are old and slick as ice; I ignored a similar suggestion the first time I hunted with Mooreland and regretted it – both horse and rider thankfully avoided any spills, but not without some scary slip-sliding as we went along the roads. I had borium on the next time (and every time after that) and was fine.

Midland is also excellent - it is about 3 hours from Birmingham to its Fitzpatrick fixtures, which are east of Montgomery. Mooreland and Midland had a joint meet in Fitz over the weekend.

My own Bear Creek Hounds also hunt in Chambers County in eastern Alabama – those fixtures are about 2 hours away from Birmingham, heading east towards Talladega on I-20 and then south towards Wadley. We have a great time in that country as well.

Mooreland, Midland and Bear Creek are all fantastic hunts…serious hunts with fast going, wonderful hounds and staff, and great folks!!.

I think they all have a second flight…either way you go, you’ll meet fantastic folks and great hunting. You’re in the middle great hunting.

Go for it!!!
