Hunting out west

Borrowing a link from Facebook, if you’ve never hunted out west, this will give you a pretty good feel for what it’s like to be in the field:

And here’s an interesting article on the Tejon Hounds:

That was exhilarating! Not quite as hilly as VA and TN. I love wide open spaces.

Neat! Interesting fact, Tejon Ranch is one of the largest contiguous private owned parcels of land in California - at 270,000 acres!

Looks like fun country to gallop in - but I have to say, where are the fences! Love some fun jumps out in a hunt field.

Its been years, but I used to ride with Los Altos Hounds in northern California occasionally. The lands they hunt are similar rolling pastures (on much less land!) with coops over the various fence lines - and log jumps, gullies and such.

Thank you

One of my dream is to hunt ‘out west’: thanks for the link

Ooo. I hunted with Los Altos Hunt when I was a kid. Loved it. I had the best horse you could ever imagine, but of course I was too dumb to realize it!

Far fewer fence lines out west, so far fewer jumps except for sagebrush and ditches. Arapahoe and Red Rock around the kennels are well paneled though. It is challenging to panel when you have no idea which line Wile E will take. Edited to add, I have been on a few 4+ mile runs and not seen a fence.

fox or coyote?

Coyote. Foxes are few and far between out west.

I would like more details on how to ride next year. I checked their website and couldn’t find anything i.e. capping fees and times.

With Tejon or RRH?

I went to their site (Tejon Hounds), capping fee is $10, hunts are often on the Tejon Ranch - and you are right, no schedule, you do have to contact them for that.
