Hunting Stables near Asheville, NC

I am thinking about retiring to the Asheville area in a few years. I grew up showing hunters and fox hunting from the 70’s - 90’s, but I haven’t ridden for 20 years and would like to return to at least the hunting side of things. Are there any stables nearby that regularly haul to hunts and hunter paces? I am looking for a full service barn with training. While my focus will be on hunting rather than showing, I really enjoy learning and improving. Quality horsemanship and stable management is a priority over a fancy facility.

I also compete in dog events (conformation, herding, nose work), so if anyone can recommend a relatively cool climate (that’s why I’m targeting Asheville) that has good access to both dog events and fox hunting (along with great hiking for my husband), I’m open to suggestions.

Would really appreciate any recommendations - thanks!

The closest hunts to Asheville are the Tryon Hounds and the Green Creek Hounds, both located in the Tryon area about 40 minutes south of Asheville (straight down I-26). I would suggest you try to contact those hunts to see if they know of any boarding situations that meet your needs.

The Tryon area is also home to the country’s largest and longest-running series of Hunter Paces, 28 years old and with about 14-18 events annually, which starts each September and runs through May. The “Western Carolina Hunter Pace” organizer’s website is http://www.wchpace.org

You will need to come down the mountain to Polk Co. We have great hunting with Green Creek and Tryon, but it’s an hour to Asheville. People from Hendersonville will ride with us now and then, but they still have to go up and down the Grade. Especially in the winter, there will be times trailering would not be fun.

Here at the foot of the mountain we do have warmer summers, but make up for that with much milder winters, and spring and fall last a long time. We ride year round, and there are good trainers in every discipline.

ETA-we are very nice, too.

Erin Gambrell at Harmony Training has a full-service hunt barn. She’s very nice and very competent.
