Hunting Vacation

I love to fox hunt! My husband, not a rider, but someone who hunts anything that moves, is always bringing up different places he’d like to go to : deer hunt, elk hunt, dove hunt, duck hunt, goose hunt…( you get the picture ) and that he’d love for me to go with him. I keep telling him, I’d love to go if…there is a way I could fox hunt while there. Otherwise I’d end up twiddling my thumbs while he was in the woods, as most of these places are not set up for a spouse who doesn’t participate in the same sport.

Do any of you fellow fox hunters have any suggestions that I could file away for when we actually plan one of these trips? It’s not something we will do this year, but maybe next season or the one after that.

Examples of places he goes

Memphis, TN. Deer duck and turkey
Iowa. Deer
North Battleford, Sasc, Canada duck and goose
Alabama deer
Idaho elk

He loves to travel, so new places are good. The sites in TN and Canada are regular places he goes with close friend connections at those locales.

So, I’d love to hear your ideas of what game he could hunt and the name of a local fox hunt club that would have a livery.

TIA

Wow you have a different hobby but I’ll try this one. It seems fun.

You could try Colorado. Down on the front range the Arapahoe Hunt hunts SE of Denver. You can deer hunt in places on the front range. Up in the mountains is deer hunting ,elk hunt and other stuff. If he fishes there is some really good fly fishing in the mountains.

If you are willing to go a bit further afield, the first place that popped to my mind was Scotland. I know there’s a place in the borders that hires out hunt horses -http://www.thombell.co.uk/hunting.html...read the bottom of the page, says he can also arrange other activities including shooting and fishing. I’m sure there are other places in the UK that will do this sort of thing too, but the Scottish Borders are absolutely beautiful. This place is less than 2 hours from Edinburgh.

jawa -

Generally the mounted foxhunting season is from fall to spring.

Not so with the seasons you’re referring to.

What might work better is for Mr. Jawa to figure out where he wants to be hunting, what species, and when. The seasons are all over the place for the species you list.

We’ve had Canadians come down to VA to hunt in January - not sure how much foxhunting is done when winter sets in up there. (of course, you could just go duck hunting with Mr. Jawa - it’s great!)

You may want to work it out so that you are hunting in northern climes earlier in the season, and in southern parts later in the season; if you’re trying to coordinate with foxhunting.

Does he hunt upland game? (quail, chukar, grouse, etc). In VA the season is close to mounted foxhunting and there are plenty of clubs and preserves (Quail is more plentiful SE of us, I think)

Hope that helps.

E2- Colorado is one of the places we have talked about. He’d love to elk hunt there. Maybe we could find a place near where Arapahoe hunt is located. Thanks for the suggestion.

E4L- we may have to save that one for once the kids are out of college! Kind of when the tuition payments can be used for major trips! Awesome suggestion though!

JSwan- it certainly won’t be easy to plan, but maybe one a year for different game on his part and a different hunt for me!

Thanks for the suggestions, keep em coming!
