hunts for beginners?

My friend wants to try fox hunting. Is there any hunts geared for people who want to get their feet wet? We live near Woodbridge, VA. Don’t mind traveling but trying to stay within 2 hours of home.

Thanks.

Quite a few hunts are adding third flights. The pace is often geared to the lowest common denominator. Rappahannock Hunt does a third flight every Sunday.

just my opinion of course!

I recommend Loudoun Hunt out of Leesburg, Va. Bull Run Hunt in Culpeper usually has a 3rd flight that’s just walk/trot and a good novice experience. Check with Caroline Hunt and Commonwealth Hounds closer to you for information. Great bets there too.
Just keep in mind that there IS an expected level of horse control and skill assumed BEFORE you go. You MUST be able to W/T/C at pace with groups at a minimum. AND be able to do this over very varied terrain, obstacles, footings & conditions. The best thing your friend can do is contact the hunt and accurately describe herself/horse and see what they say. AND going with a mentor will help insure a better first experience for all. Let them guide her along and advise her. I also recommend she go car follow a hunt to see how it all goes.

Thank you ladies so much! I’ve passed the info to my friend. I’m afraid my mare would probably have a heart attack and die. She’s not fond of woods or water. She doesn’t mind dogs, but god forbid those trees would eat her. It sounds like a great time.

Well, you don’t need to ride a horse to enjoy hunting with hounds.

Why not come out as my guest with a foot pack? Bring your friend. We hunt rabbits, on foot, with basset hounds.

Dress is casual - wear hiking shoes/boots and bring your sense of humor.
