Does anyone know of hunts that still accept, put down, and process donations of horses to be fed to the hounds ? In the past this was considered an honor and a dignified ending for a lot of hunt horses. I have a horse that I am considering this for but do not know who takes them anymore. Any suggestions ?
question back at ya!
Well Duh!!!..you mighta told us where you are !!! No info AND a new member will sometimes make us…cautious. So where are you located?
There are a couple of hunts in our area that will take cattle & horses. Can you transport the horse there? Just try calling your local hunts perhaps?!!!
hunts that accept horses for hounds
I am in southern Maryland and I have already approached our hunt which doesn’t feed horsemeat and the National Zoo for the big cats but they don’t either. Not trying to start any controversy, just seems wasteful to put him in a big hole when there could be some benefit to his passing.
If you can travel to NoVA, Middleburg, Piedmont, and Orange County all feed flesh. You’d have to call the kennels and see if they can take a horse at this time.
Most hunts will not take a horse in the summer, But do so in the fall winter and spring, and freeze the meat.
Really? Back in the day at Bull Run, we gladly accepted them year 'round- and for the most part, went and picked them up if dead- live horses to be put down were typically delivered to the kennels. The meat was gratefully accepted, and going to get the carcass a very small price to pay for the privilege of using that farmer’s land.
Potomac Hunt used to take horses…I sent my mare there, seemed rather Karmic since she’d hunted with their hounds for years.
Blue Ridge does too, I think.
And yes, winter or cool weather is prefered.
You can also try a rendering plant - not as hunter-ly but the horse’s remains are used to their fullest.
You can also try some private packs or backyard type hunters who have small packs of hounds. I’m sure there are plenty in southern Maryland.
I don’t know what our specifications are, but I know there was a horse dispatched on hunt country last fall and the carcass was left there to feed/attract coyotes, fox, etc.
I am in Delaware and have a WB mare I’d like to do the same with. I do not know any hunts and don’t have a trailer to get there anywhere right now? Any ideas? I don’t mind holding her until fall (she’s been here 2 years already- what’s a few more months!) but would love for her to go tomorrow…
