Anecdotally, does anyone have good (or bad, or neutral) experiences to share re: Hyaluronex? It aint cheap, but I’m thinking it might help my 15 year old, who’s currently getting hock injections every 6 months.
My previous horse, who had some arthritis issues, got an HA supplement (which is what Hyaluronex is) routinely. It absolutely helped. I do think that a liquid or gel HA supplement is more effective, but they tend to be more expensive than supplements that have HA in powdered or pelleted form.
I also gave my older dog the canine version, and it helped her as well.
Totally anecdotal evidence, but to my mind, it’s definitely worth trying.
Agree with @Posting Trot, except I use Lubrisyn HA, which is also a liquid and slightly cheaper - very slightly.
My retired trail horse (26) was diagnosed with “dry hocks” by the farm vet, a few years back; he has never been injected. I put the horse on Lubrisyn HA on my own and he does seem to move a lot more fluid.
Something else I noticed that may be purely coincidental is that the edema he gets in one hind leg during the summer disappeared and it has not returned.
100% worth it. You can usually get a % off either through the website directly or through Heartland Pharmacy Supply online.
It’s cheaper than Lubrisyn if you look at the amount of HA per fluid ounce. We buy a half gallon at a time and it lasts our two TBs maybe 2-3 months? I don’t know exactly. I do double up the dose the day before a lesson or a show per the instructions on the bottle.
My horse is a 12yo OTTB and is arthritic, like very average for what you’d expect in a horse his age/size/workload. He also has chronic Lyme so a good joint supplement is really important. I can definitely feel if he misses a few days of it.
That said, he does get his hocks/stifles done annually, and this is to supplement on top of that. It’s not a replacement for joint injections but we are very very happy with it.
We used Lubrisyn many years ago when it was fairly new for my QH gelding. He did really well on it, and he was never injected. If Hyaluronex existed back then, we probably would’ve used it instead. Both are good products but we like Hyaluronex more due to the price. I’ll try to find the amount of HA per ounce and will put it in a separate post once I find it.
You do have to keep it in the house. If it gets too hot or too cold, it “deactivates” (not sure how else to describe it). Basically it breaks down and isn’t effective anymore.
Okay I think I found it. It looks like Lubrisyn has 150mg per ounce of HA, while Hyaluronex has 120mg of HA per half ounce, so 240 per ounce.
That’s what I found directly from both of their websites.
Thanks for this!
Following - I just started using Lubrysin and can see some improvement. Interested to see what others have to say about Hyaluronex.
Select The Best HylaLUBE - 325 mg/oz, is the most concentrated I’ve seen. Price is reasonable too. I used to use it on my old guy. I thought it helped.
Years back, Horse Journal did a study on these, and back then Conquer liquid was used and found to be effective. So that was what I bought when I first used these products. Since then others have come out with their own, some more concentrated than others, but I have no idea if one brand is more effective than another for some scientific reason I don’t understand.
