Hygain pulling out of the US

Sad news for those of us using Hygain feed. They’re pulling out of the US and shutting down their US operations immediately.

That’s a bummer. They had some interesting products that I never personally tried, but was quite curious about.

I switched my horses from Renew Gold to Hygain Balance a few years ago, and they’re doing really well on it. Such a shame.

My barn was feeding it up till a month or two ago, and loved it. They only switched because it was so hard to get pallets of it in a timely manner. A shame.

Such a shame …I had all of mine on the Zero & MetaSafe because of the low sugar & starch and soy free …looking now for something comparable…I know Triple crown & Tribute I believe have soy free options but the sugar & starches are considerably higher

Had my whole barn on Zero (three oldies with Cushings, one air fern and my advanced driving pony). Really bummed, as all were doing very very well on their feed. Let the research begin. . .

I think the Zero has a feeding rate that is higher than the balancers for TC and Tribute (though less than the senior or performance feeds in the soy free options), so multiply the NSC% times 1 or 2 pounds versus a minimum of 3.5 pounds for Hygain, and the overall sugar intake is probably not as high. If you need both soy free and flax free, though, there aren’t many other options aside from a forage pellet plus v/m type diet, as both TC and Tribute definitely contain flax.

Yeah that’s true …I was only feeding my horses 2 cups /day of the Zero -mainly as a taste tempter and just a little something extra mixed in with their soaked Timothy Balance Cubes/Flax & Vermont Blend Pro…and my mini and mini donkey the MetaSafe 1/2 cup/day - so in grand scheme I suppose replacing with a different soy free option might not be terrible even if “nsc “ % is considerably higher shouldn’t be too much concern when feeding a small amount …most of these horses aren’t on pasture and get tested low sugar hay …only 2 get grass with grazing muzzles

tribute makes a flax and soy free feed; not sure how it compares to hygain though.

I was looking at those …they look like good alternatives except that they are considerably higher in starch & sugar …probably not a big deal if you’re only feeding small amounts

This looks like a possible good alternative to Hygain Zero & MetaSafe…it’s soy, flax, corn, wheat, molasses and grain free

Lots of major companies are putting out “conversion” charts.

Yeah, but Buckeye’s was full of baloney. Depending on your reasons for feeding Hygain, their suggestions were mostly terrible.

really? Yikes. I haven’t looked closely at them all yet but dang, that’s disappointing :frowning:

I’m curious about the Low and Steady. There is nothing on their website yet (probably why it says “contact us for more information”:grinning:)

They posted on social media about it:

It’s a soy-based low calorie ration balancer.

What’s “low calorie”? Frustrating they don’t list that, not that I can find anyway

There’s a good set of charts that people can use I saw on FB

All of those Buckeye ones have allergic ingredients, like soy, flax, oats, etc. The only one I have found to replace Hygain Meta for my two allergic horses is the Bluebonnet Limited, but none of the local dealers here have it yet. I am tempted to turn to a vitamin/mineral supplement like Uckele Sport Horse Grass with alfalfa pellets and rice bran pellets.

Horses looked fantastic on the Hygain and I am sad about this.
