I feel like an idiot! lol

Ok, so I’ve sat a lot of rank stuff in my day. Even recently, on different horses. My own horse is a very nice guy, usually doesn’t react to anything. Today we went on a short hack around the property before my lesson. Unbeknownst to me, something had just killed a skunk. Don’t know why I didn’t smell it. Anyway, I walked by it just as a vulture and another very large bird swooped down to fight over the carcass. My horse snorted and spun around, bit didn’t go anywhere. I slipped to one side a bit and tried to clamber back on, but was unsuccessful. I ended up landed on a very well-cushioned part of my anatomy.

I feel like such an idiot. I looked over and down to see what my horse was looking at so of course when he went left, I went exactly where I was looking. Fortunately as soon as I lost my balance my horse stopped and stood there until I could dust myself off and get back on. I suppose I should be grateful that my horse was so good about the whole thing, but I’m still mad I fell off!!!

Join the club!

Hahaha, I thought you were going to land on skunk in that story .

The stupidest falls always happen off the well-trained, perfectly behaved horses :stuck_out_tongue:

At least your horse waited for you. I came off the same way a few years ago when a deer popped up out of the tall grass just as I was leaning forward to get a fly off my horse’s neck. Sucker stayed long enough for me to get up and make sure I was okay…then he hauled ass back to the barn without me. Goofball.

Ha! I too thought “sitting on rank stuff” was going to include a skunk.

I had an annoying fall like that too–walking around on a loose rein to cool down. Wasn’t even a big spook, but I was sitting rather than riding, and when she pulled the “chair” out from under me, I just couldn’t recover. Even as I was falling, I was thinking how dumb it was that I couldn’t stay on for that minor little spook.

Yes, that was it!

I’m glad I am not the only one in that club.

I did it with a drink once. My dad was visiting the barn and offered me his soda as he was leaving and I was finishing my ride. As I rode my horse in on a loose rein with my legs kicked forward, I noticed he was getting progressively antsy, like something was bothering him. By the time I realized it was the ice jiggling against the Styrofoam cup it was too late and he was on one side of the yard snorting, I was on my tookas and the drink was a couple feet behind me. :open_mouth:

So you managed to not land on the skunk? That’s a win in my book

Did you have an audience?

I part lease a very opinionated mare who can be a bit dramatic and throw some pretty good tantrums, I don’t come off of her because I’m expecting bad behavior, keep her on the aids and pay full attention at all times. She’s on the list of “afraid to ride” horses that the teens in the barn talk about.

A couple of months ago, I was hacking BM’s very sweet and easy,TB gelding in the indoor. Because he is a good guy, I was enjoying being on an easy horse and I was trotting along, nice and relaxed, without paying 100% attention. TB spooked at a patch of sunlight, not even a big spook, and I tumbled right off the side. The teen girls saw it and were laughing at me…“You fell off of HIM!”.

It was funny, and ,yes, I felt like an idiot!
