I got a new samshield - now how do I care for it?

My darling husband took me to the tack shop yesterday for a pre valentines day surprise. I just want to go try on helmets so I had an idea of what fit. He decided it was a good time to get my valentines day present, so he sat me down, made me close my eyes, and try on helmets. The closing my eyes was because he knew I would never spend so much on a helmet on my own, so I would try and convince myself that another helmet fit just as well.

We tried on so many helmets, he made me walk around, do jumping jacks, come forward and back, and the Samshield was the hands down winner.

So it’s my show helmet, and fingers crossed I don’t fall in it so it can last me awhile. A quick google search didn’t come up with a handy caring for your samshield guide, and the folks at the tack shop didn’t have advice either. Any words to the wise? Obviously it will live in its bag, in the safe spot in my tack trunk. I will continue to school with my schooling helmet that fits properly and hasn’t had a fall. But its a shadowmatte and I am worried about scratches!

I don’t think that there is much to prevent the scratches from happening other than what you said. Put it back in the helmet bag when you dismount. Take the liner out before you put it in the bag and let it dry completely (I wash mine pretty regularly too) so the bag doesn’t smell.

Other than that. Try not to let it hit the floor, keep it in a safe place. Some scratches are inevitable, but you can do your best to minimize them.

There was a thread somewhere that someone got their helmet replaced under warranty because of scratches. So at the very least keep an eye on it during that first year and contact Samshield if it scuffs.

You could also buy a shipping bag rather than the one they give you which is more padded.

Good call - I will grab one this weekend.

I did read through all of their catalogue and found where they talk about care, and those warranties. It’s unfortunate that they don’t offer the repair option if you fall off in North America.

That’s what I do with mine and it’s surviving really well so far!

Don’t drop it, leave it in a hot car/trailer, or leave it in the sun.

The don’t repair them in NA, but they do have a replacement policy

I use armour all on the outer shell before shows and clinics. It reduces the appearance of scuffs and makes it look smooth and shiny
