I got another dog--I'm not sure she's a good fit Update: I will rehome her

This is Isla. Her backstory is that her owner died, the person that took her over let her get pregnant and dumped her. She’s a year old. I don’t see any boobs or anything, so I’m not sure if I believe the whole story.

They said she’s 3/4 White Swiss Shepherd and 1/4 Husky. Here she is modeling my yard shoes and dog food bag.

Thanks! She has settled nicely but she doesn’t seem to have a concept of home. She does what she’s asked to do, she’s very obedient, but she rarely asks for pets and she doesn’t bark at all. She loves her food and her balls and ls learning what healthy treats are. I treat with apples and carrots mostly.

She is a delightful dog tho. I hope she will come to know what home is.

It takes time for them to decompress. My beagle didn’t feel at home until 6 months after his adoption. I was his 5th home so might have taken longer for him.

She doesn’t vocalize at all. There was a person in my driveway and she came up to me a whisper-barked and put her paw on my leg until I followed her. She’s a very, very good egg.

Update…Isla has backed my terrier (heart dog) into a corner a few times and put him into a position to defend himself. That is not something I want my beloved dog to go through.

My GSD and the new dog have also sort of ganged up on the terrier and he has rolled over to show his belly.

It’s 7:30 AM on a Sunday morning right now and Isla has backed my terrier in to a corner twice and she’s so sneaky if I don’t keep a close eye on her she will do it again.

What are your options at this point? It really sucks she is such a doll but the pack dynamics aren’t working out.

She IS in heat right now. Do you thinks she could be trying to get romantic with him?

It could possibly be related to heat, but it could also be a young dog trying to establish her spot in the pack when she is not used to a stable dynamic. With two shepherd-type dogs, there is an increased risk of pack mentality taking over. I would make sure your terrier is separated from the two big dogs if you are not right there beside them. It is also important that you clearly establish that you are alpha and you won’t tolerate aggression in the pack. Shepherds and huskies both feel insecure if there is not strong leadership. She would probably really benefit from a job like agility or running.

Your primary responsibility is to your existing dogs so if the terrier is in physical or emotional danger, you need to address that immediately.

I am not the right personality type to lead such strong-willed dogs, so I understand if it’s hard for you to step up to this challenge. If you’re also not a strong alpha, it may be best to find another home for the new pup. Good luck!
