I got my dog DNA tested!

I thought for sure that he was half chihuahua half corgi… but I was way off!! He is a smorgasbord:

”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹”‹ 12.5% American Eskimo Dog
12.5% Chihuahua
12.5% Japanese Shiba Inu
12.5% Pekingese
12.5% Pomeranian
37.5% Breed Group(s)

  • sporting
  • herding
  • Asian
  • companion

Have you found any unexpected results with your dog’s DNA test?? I wonder how accurate these things are… I just don’t get how he’s so LONG in his body with no corgi in there whatsoever!!

According to my dog forum group the accuracy depends on which company you used. I used Embark and they said my rescue is 100% GSD, which sort of surprised me as I thought she might have some Husky hiding in there based on her looks and activity level and temperament.
Embark is connected to Cornell University and has many vets who run the genetic and health depts.
Your little guy is adorable. I wonder if somewhere in the sporting breeds is a bit of corgi that shows up in the physical
traits but not enough to change the dna.

Dogs aren’t long…they’re just short. He has the dwarfism gene, which Corgis carry dominant, but so do several other breeds.

He is very very cute. I would have guessed Chi/Corgi too. We usually assume a cross, right? When a mutt is likely a mix of multiple breeds. A mutt from a long line of mutts lol.

I did a Wisdom DNA test on my dog.

25% boxer
12.5 Pembroke welsh corgi
12.5 chihuahua
12.5 american staffordshire terrier
37.5 terrier, sporting, Middle eastern and hound group.

I would have not ever guessed she had corgi or Chihuahua in her. She’s about 40lbs and very proportionate in height and length. She’s definitely a mutt from a long line of mutts.

@Marla 100 what dog forum group are you in? Curious to check one out!

Yes the one I did was Wisdom Panel as well. My dog was just found on the side of the road but was potty trained and comfortable in a crate right off the bat, so I had wondered if he was some kind of purposeful crossbreed that had a great home beforehand, but these results indicate that he was more of backyard accident

@Marla 100 what dog forum group are you in?

It’s German Shepherd Dog Forum

They are best guesses. All breeds are a cross of some sort to begin with - they are all derived from other breeds. And even though some have been established for hundreds of years I don’t believe there is any definitive DNA standard for each breed yet (and may never be possible.) Parentage is possible…breed ID is just a guess.

Believe me, breed clubs would love this to be possible. We have cross-breeding in my breed and it is impossible to prove.

Heard on the news today that an apartment complex near Orlando will be using dna from dog poo to track delinquent tenants at the complex who do not pick up after their dog. There’s even a company set up to do this.
I smell the lawsuits coming to fight any charges.

I wish my place would do this. They are really accommodating to dogs, have poop bag dispensers and cans every where, and at least once a month I’m cleaning off my shoes.
