I love ranch sorting

I have found a new passion, in a western saddle. Ranch sorting! I have ridden english hunter jumpers all my life until about three years ago I converted to western. I am now totally hooked at a great barn that has a lot of cows to play with, and placed 3rd (first placing in a western event) in a little jackpot series we are having on Tuesdays!

What a hoot! I love it, it’s so fun and affordable. I have a little quarter horse cutting bred mare that is teaching me so much!
I have to hang on to the horn a bit because she is so catty with the cows.

Anybody else doing sorting?

Good for you! There is cow sorting at my barn, but I haven’t tried it yet. I have gone out for barrels, poles, etc. with my local Western Circuit (I’m an English rider too). Well done on your debut!

On the Ultimate Dressage Message Board there are a few people who are very versatile -they ride cow ponies in dressage, cow sorting, reining, etc. Here’s the most recent thread.

Have always loved working cattle!!! Ex team roper… I dabbled in team penning for awhile, and my parents do ranch horse shows, where sorting is an event.

They have 30-40 head of long horn/corriente cattle so we do our own ranch sorting fairly often. It’s BIG fun!!

Congrats, and have fun!

I have done ranch sorting over the years, and when you have a cowy horse, then it becomes way more than fun. I have sorted on arabians (they love cows), a fjordX (he was so quiet he was great, but not truly as cowy), and now my little bay sportster model of a AQHA mare.

I just did a 2 day sorting clinic this weekend, spendy, but oh so much fun with tons of cow time.

My little mare is so wide that saddle fit has been an adventure, and my new custom wade saddle had such stiff fenders that even with the stirrups turned, made it really hard to get my leg on for support and that wade horn isn’t the best to push back on compared to a cow horse saddle. I ended up riding in a slick seat pleasure saddle, which was doable with chinks, but add super agiliity of my mare, still a challenge.

I got my custom saddle fixed, but I just found a really wide little barrel saddle and that’s going to be my sorting saddle. Super sticky and a horn to push back on if needed.

Can’t wait until I go again, it was a blast and probably my favorite thing to do with my horse. It is so strange to see my quiet little mare turn into a fire breathing dragon on cows. Damn, she’s fast. The clinician loved her and I got used to her amazing movement. I have had a lot of horses, but never ridden one like her (except for a trained cutter) that will get down and dirty with the cow.

I have done a little ranch sorting in the past (like it way more than team penning), but moved on to doing reined cowhorse, ranch horse versatility shows & trail challenges (cowboy races). I would still do sorting if I had the time (and the extra $$), it’s fun!!

What fun!!!

I, too, grew up doing english disciplines (first h/j, then eventing, then dressage) and am also considering a switch to western. Why did you decide to switch? What kind of saddle do you like? Are you taking lessons or just doing it on your own?

I’ve had my horse moving cows twice and I swear it was the funnest thing I’ve ever done!!!

Well, we have a working cattle ranch so I know you’re having fun.

I totally agree. I have bought recently a very cowy cutting bred mare. OMG it is is so fun, and she is teaching me tons of stuff.

I have a lot to learn still, but we recently have placed high in our last few events! I am very encouraged and have such a great time every time out. I am lucky to be near a barn that can teach me this very fun equine sport!

I switched because my last showjumper passed away from old age, and I have always wanted to do cow work. I tried it about 10 years ago in Arizona, and knew I loved it. After a few years bumbling around the country, moves, and job changes… I ended up in Escondido, CA. My long time friend since my Hap Hansen years… Marcy Gerhke got me hooked… she bought a western horse several years ago, and is having the same amazing fun I am with it.

Best thing I ever did. I sold my Devoucoux (I was heartbroken at the time) but bought my QH mare for just a bit over what I sold the saddle for. (How many H/J horses (finished and trained) could you buy for that price???

I am just having great time, the people are great, and the trainer at our barn is a really great guy. I am totally addicted, and learning so much with every event.

I’m similar to you… grew up riding eq/jumpers/eventers then 4 years ago took the plunge and sold my upper level eventer packer to buy a finished reiner. I’ve missed jumping but man I love this little pony! He’s a complete packer and has me in the points/money most times. Cutting bred and hadn’t seen a cow until I got him, within the 5th sorting practice we were sorting the whole pen of cows bridless, with ease! No amount of money could buy him!!!

Just moved a few months ago and am still getting the lay of the land down and learn the area but I’m planning on taking him to a donkey sorting tonigh. It’ll be fun to see how he reacts to the donkeys vs cows.

I did a couple of ranch sorting clinics with my halter bred APHA gelding that I actually did hunters with (you know, because body builder types are always so good at jumping ;))

We had a ball! Neither of us were any good at it, but he loved chasing the cows. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10100893418648710&set=a.10100893411004030.3025619.4923850&type=3&theater
