I got my quarantine pup (4 y/o Beagle mix) at the end of May. Took a bit of time for him to settle and he’s a total ass at times but I adore him.
I got him to be active and go hiking with, but he’s more comfortable snuggling under his fuzzy blanket and playing with the kiddos.
Mutts are the best and your pup is precious! It’s such a good feeling to see their smile and happy face as soon as you walk through the door. So happy for you! Hopefully you keep adding links to updated pics here.
This is the exact reason for my excitement being tempered by anxiety. Every dog I have ever had was just a good, solid citizen. We had mixed breed finds all through childhood and everyone was great. Despite insisting I would always have rescues, I caved and bought a chihuahua puppy as my first “adult pet purchase” and, in complete defiance of all chihuahua stereotypes, she’s the nicest little dog on the planet (though, as I referenced earlier, runs the roost around here dog-wise). My vet mentions every time she’s at the vet she’s never met a nicer chi  My other two girls; the 3yo I have had since a puppy - she is technically a “designer breed” (aka overpriced cross-bred) and she was the easiest dog on the planet. Cried maybe a total of 15 minutes the entire first week; slept through the night at about 3 months of age; loves every living creature human or otherwise. The other girl I inherited when my sister had a child and decided she could have a dog (insert huge eyeroll), is super high energy but temperamentally stable as they come (but she came to me that way), and my JRT I had to put down due to infirmities of old age, while neurotic, was a gem to all living things; however I adopted her as a senior dog.
What if this little guy is a super alpha, tried to kill the cats, tries to usurp the chi, etc? I just have visions of “terror dogs” as you describe above. I know a lot of it is training and upbringing; I have raised two great dogs on my own but what if I just lucked out and any idiot could have handled them?
Well - he is here! I picked him up Sunday. He has been such a good boy. He is sleeping nicely in his crate at night with only one nightly wake-up trip outside (which I have woken him up for each night). The resident dogs are a little stand-offish yet; he’s not too good at social cues and they’re a little alarmed at his “in your face” method of trying to play. The chihuahua put him in his place and he is very respectful of her now, so he’s getting it.
He had his first vet appt today - he’s just under 10lbs at a day under 9 weeks. Only one little glitch; I noticed he walked a little funny behind and asked the vet about it. She says his knees are a bit concerning and his hips are very lax right now. Not great news but she said he may very well grow out of it. She said he is a “very unique mix.” If I had to guess, daddy was a pit/pit mix but he’s pretty long and low right now and vet commented on his “wide-sprung ribcage” so he may stay pretty wide. She said it’s very hard to tell how big he will end up; mom was petite but with no clue who dad was it’s a bit of a crapshoot right now.
He’s a pretty cool little guy so far - has a lot to say for sure! Barks at his toys, gets under the coffee table and army crawls around under it barking with joy, etc.
I will have to figure out how to post pics on the new forum layout but as you might expect, he is pretty freakin cute!
