I Must Be Nuts..Getting a Puppy!

The title says it all

Do I need another dog? No. Who ever needs another pup?? But - I did lose my old girl this summer, and the rescue I got her from had a cute litter of (9!!) Heinz-57s, and I am working from home for at least the next 6 months still…so, I enabled myself right into one.

Most of them were still available. I did want a male so had 6 to pick from, and selected a smallish male. I say “smallish” in terms of his littermates…he will probably top out about 45-60lbs…hard to tell because mom’s a 30ish-lb beagle/Dachshund (?? Long dog of some sort) and dad is unknown. I pick him up in a few weeks (they’re only 6 weeks right now).

I am excited, but nervous! My last pup (she’s now 3) was so easy to train & housebreak, gets along famously with the resident alpha peanut dog and the cats. I don’t know that that’s a testament to my training skills, though, so much as her just being a sweetheart. I also have mostly had females and never had any trouble with my all-female pack but thought I would go with a male. I am looking forward to the fact that I will have ample time to devote to training but worried a little bit about socialization in a currently antisocial world.

Happy for any reassurance that it will be fine

Today is the gotcha day for my totally “don’t need another dog but he needs me” 5th dog. I knew I wanted a male but I think I would have gotten him no matter what. He was found under a dumpster, starving and bruised. I picked him up from a shoestring rescue that pulls feral/unwanted dogs and puppies off the reservations in central MT. Hinted toward being small but he turned out not so small. Heaven only knows what he is genetically but a year ago today we pulled into the driveway together after a 12 hour drive and we have been in a total love affair ever since. I can’t possibly express how much I love this pup and how much he loves me. He was only about 7 weeks old when he was picked up and went through quarantine at the rescue, and spent a lot of time in his kennel there b/c the poor lady had 3 other puppy litters at the same time. We don’t get out a lot but he’s good with people and everyone basically, a little wary of loud men, but anything that life serves him up he piles right in. Years ago I got a pup right when I got pertussis and that chi cross pup was totally unsocialized b/c all I did for a year was sit in my chair and cough, so she was my pertussis pup. Now this pup is my pandemic pup but they both have good hearts and do just fine. There’s nothing not to love about a new puppy and I hope you love yours even half as much as I love mine!

I picked up a black Cocker Spaniel from Animal Services on my birthday. She’s 2-3 years old and just lovely in every way. I think it was either fate or destiny. I was not even sure I really wanted another dog after the last few disastrous dogs.

We had one who would resource guard, run away from home, and was generally a terror- didn’t want to house break. His attitude was “Make me.” He didn’t make eye contact very well. He died from cancer at age 11. Our next dog was a shepherd - the most dog reactive dog I have ever met. She’s still with us and mostly well behaved as long as no strangers are around and no strange dogs either! Next was the dog we re-homed because she attacked the shepherd twice, attacked my cats, and resulted in the accident when I slipped and fell and severely injured my foot. My foot still has not recovered.

I had serious concerns about getting another dog. Is she going to attack my cats? Have major behavioral or health issues? After my injury I swore I was Never getting another dog. No more dogs-ever!

Then I had a dream about getting another dog. I dreamed about going to look at a dog, and it was our old dog Misty reincarnated. Misty was the dog I had as a child. I taught her to pull a cart and I drove her up and down the street like you would a pony. I would yell “side” if a car came and she would pull over. She loved to run down the road at full speed. I wore out my shoes, as I used my shoes as breaks and the cement would wear the heels right off the shoes. She really was a wonderful dog for a child. Big, gentle, yet affectionate.

I have no idea where that dream came from. I don’t usually dream about my previous pets. And a couple days after that dream, my friend emailed me about the cocker spaniel.

We picked up Madeline and she’s already part of the pack- accepted the cats immediately and gets along with everyone. I’ve never had a dog transition so easily to a new household. I expected some trouble adjusting, some behavioral problem, some issues with housebreaking, or barking from being lonely…I expected something. Not such an easy transition - full house privileges after 3 days. She likes to sleep in the recliner, will climb on my lap or sleep on my feet. Really impressed with how lucky I am to have a nice dog like this.

The questions haunt me…where did she come from? Why is no one looking for her? Who wouldn’t microchip such a nice dog? How could she end up as a stray? I’m guessing either an elderly person owned her or perhaps a student. It’s just so weird that she ended up at a shelter. If only all dogs were this well behaved.

Good luck with your new puppy and hopefully it is as nice of a dog as you could dream of.

Enroll in “Homeschool the dog” right now! Yes, even before your puppy comes so you have time to watch the videos and prepare your training plan.
Susan Garrett is awesome and she is offering that program for only $49 until the end of October.
she also has great (free!) podcasts on her website www.dogsthat.com
Don’t want to sound like an infomercial but it is really good training - science based and all through games.
And congrats on your new pup!!

Yep, totally nuts. My best girl died in February and I got an 8 week old in June. She has been a giant pain in the ass but there is light at the end of the tunnel. There have been plenty of “what was I thinking?” moments but I can’t imagine not having her. She is my 5th dog, and I still have #4 who is 9 years old.

My puppy came very shy, and my best socialization happened at Southern States (feed store). Every time, 2-4 cashiers/employees will take the time to give treats and love. They know how to act around animals, and will squat down and make it easy for the puppy to approach them for treats. Going there on a regular basis has built the good association with the puppy, and now she’s excited to go in, but still just a little tentative to approach. She’s way more outgoing there than anywhere else with strangers, though. I also found an in-person puppy class for her, which was held in an indoor arena (for horses), so the end doors were open and it was pretty much like being outdoors, so safer during COVID. She was scared of the other puppies and people the first couple of classes but really came out of her shell by class 3, then was actually used to try to help a new puppy make friends by the last class.

I bought a 7 month old Yorkie from a lady who worked really long hours and an hour drive each way. He’s cute, but (as with all Yorkies) a PITA to house train. I have 4 GSDs and a Border Collie, who learn ANYTHING in 5 minutes! If we could put a GSD brain in this puppy <sigh> it would be so awesome! My husband loves Yorkies but I’m definitely NOT a
terrier person!

Love hearing all the adoption stories! Also, appreciate the recommendations on socialization and “homeschooling.” Thank you

Despite always wanting a real mutt, I find myself a little nervous! Every other dog I’ve had in my adult life, I knew both the parents or they were already adults so a pretty known quantity. This is a complete unknown on the dad’s side. They’re all varying shades of brindle with white despite mom not having any brindle. They’re going to be a good bit bigger than her too so dad was likely a big boy. I will be sure to post photos when I get him, but rest assured he’s pretty cute.

A puppy post with no photos?! The horrors!

Any ideas for names yet? (I’m a make a list and then see what fits when I meet them kind of girl.)

I know, I know! The rescue texted me a few pics… I actually had inquired about another puppy that caught my eye a couple weeks ago and while he’d been adopted, they told me they were about to start accepting applications for this litter so I picked him before he really went “live” with any photos. Trust me, though…he’s pretty cute  He IS pretty small compared to his littermates. Not sickly small by any means but there’s a lot of variation in pup size from the looks of it. I can post a link to a video of the whole litter on Facebook and point out which he is if that satisfies the puppy pic need for the time being?

I have always wanted to name a male pup Lido, from the old Boz Scaggs song “Lido Shuffle.” So that’s tentatively his name, but I will say, sometimes a name just doesn’t fit a dog, so I wouldn’t bet my life on it just yet!

For what it’s worth, I’ve had exceptionally good luck with five mutts of unknown breeding. Three were probably half lab or golden retriever. The current two were DNA tested 2 months ago and are (in descending order of percentage): Boxer/golden retriever/great pyrenees/Boston terrier/rottweiler, and GSD/coonhound/pit bull/lab

Uh, obviously we need the FB link. Plus seeing the whole litter we can all play “guess the daddy!”

Ask you shall receive - it’s a public post so I am hoping it works!!

He is the dark brindle with the white patch on his collar area in the right hand corner of the screen at the start. If you follow him, he toddles around until he basically face-plants in the water:lol: If you lose track - he has more white on his nose that the other dark brindle ones.

They are a lot different in size - he’s a good example bc he can basically fit under one of his siblings! But he still “projects” to be like 45-60lbs I believe. And mama is ~30lbs.

The one chowing down at the start? What a cutie!! I’m partial to a dark brindles since that’s what my girl is.
You’re gonna have so much fun with him. You’ll have to post more pictures as he grows!

My best girl was put to sleep in May and a week later I adopted a stray of CL. She ended up being smaller than I wanted, not a breed I would have chosen , but one look at her face and I knew. She had never been kept inside but was basically house broken upon arrival. She sleeps on our bed and I love her more than I can say. Worth any inconvenience she may cause.

Enjoy your puppy and all the craziness they bring. They grow up too fast:D

Ohh!! I gotcha now! What a cute little chunker!

Congrats!!

I get my puppy in November and I’m alternating excitement with pure panic. It’s been years since I had a puppy in the house and I already have 2 rescues and a JRT already. The current guys are all getting older and I’m wanting something to be active with me when these guys are trying to slow down. I’m also looking for a good carrier for my JRT so that he can go hiking with us but not have to do all of the walking.

They contacted me yesterday and said, “your puppy is both whiney and bossy at the same time”. I’m like oh great, that sounds like an awesome mix. lol He’s a working dog who I hope will be my hiking partner as well as working on the ranch when we go out there. I hope to get new photos this week.
