Holy cats, I didn’t realize it was as many as that! Take that, Michael Phelps. Really, is that a record? Certainly ours is the only one of a very few sports where it would even possible (e.g. shooting, archery). And he’s still an absolutely gorgeous rider…
I believe it is a record for all Olympic sports.
AND it would be his ELEVENTH Olympics if they had not boycotted the games in Moscow in 1980. Incredible!
I just read that on NBCOlympics.com. He said he’s a better rider now. That I certainly believe. What’s TRULY astonishing is he also said he’s in the same shape physically. Yikes! I would think after a lifetime of riding something would have given out/been irreparably damaged by now (back? knees?), but the guy must be a freak of nature!
By the way, the previous record-holder, with nine OG, is an Austrian sailor. AND, Ian says, as long as Star Power (never mind him, haha) is willing, he plans to be in Rio. Good. Grief…
That is amazing, and I think more tribute should be payed to those who are good enough make it to that many Olympic games! Bully for swimming, lol.
Wonder why he wasn’t the flag bearer for Canada at the parade of nations…
I don’t care WHAT competition, I ALWAYS cheer for Ian first and the rest next.
He rocks the HOUSE!
Willing to ride young / inexperienced horses in major events. Is the epitome of tack and talent.

Ditto. Do they carry the flag again at the closing ceremonies? Maybe that will be his turn.
He had a great round today. Was sort of half-watching the screen and saw this horse zipping around and thought “Gee, that looks like Ian Miller,” and lo and behold.
He’s a great rider still. Wishing him luck tomorrow.
Just to put the number out there, he’s been riding at an Olympic level for 40 years.
Years.
If you include the boycotted Olympics, it would have been 44.
Incredible.
He was up to be the flag bearer, ended up being a poll between him and Simon Whitfield (gold medalist in Sydney and silver medalist in… Beijing I think for triathlon), but Simon won.
Ian Miller is one of my riding heroes. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to see him represent Canada four years from now.
US Eventer Michael Plumb rode in every Olympic games from 1960 - 1984, missed 1988 due to injury and again in 1992. Making him the individual to compete at the most Olympics games, 8 total.
Kudos to Ian Millar - he has always been a class act.

He was a top candidate. It’s put out for people to vote online and he received many, many votes, but just barely missed top vote. He’s very popular as is Clara Hughes who is both a Winter and Summer Olympian with medals in both.

Holy cow! Really? In what sports??
Clara has won two bronze in the Summer Olympics in 1996 in 2 different cycling events, and four medals (one gold, one silver, two bronze) over the course of three Winter Olympics in speed skating.
Her list of accomplishments in sport are far too many to even list here, but she’s a tremendous promotor of women in sports. She’s also competed in the Women’s Tour de France four times, various world championships, etc. A tremendous athlete. On top of all of this, she battles severe depression and is an active spokesperson for people with depression and getting proper treatment for it.
As a result of her in-sport and public endeavors, she was also awarded an officer of the Order of Canada and is inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame.
As for Ian Miller, Canadians have a very affectionate nickame for him - We call him “Captain Canada”.
That’s incredible, but not surprising! I remember watching him on TV competing at Spruce Meadows when I was very young. I fell in love not only with the arena, but with the whole sport while watching them. They were amazing! I’ve fallen out of touch with how he’s done since then, but he has a very special place in my horse loving heart for showing me how it could and should be done

Wow, that is remarkable! Most people can only dream of achieving that level of success in one sport, never mind multiples.
Thanks for the information.
Bit off topic, but USA’s Sheila Taormina isn’t far behind:
1996 - Atlanta - Gold - 4x200m freestyle
2000 - Sydney - 6th - Triathalon
2004 - Athens - 23rd - Triathalon
2004 - World Champion - Triathalon
2008 - Beijing - 19th - Modern Pentathlon
Incredible athletes.

But those are all summer games. At least she has a theoretical off season.
Incredible athletes for sure!
Ian Miller is 65 years old, +/- a few months. Pretty darn amazing…its been interesting to hear the ages of the riders in all the equestrian events. Significant number in their 50’s in eventing, same in show jumping, Didn’t hear ages in dressage but sure its true there too.
Makes me not feel quite so old… Though I’m at the point where I lack the intestinal fortitude necessary for showjumping and cross country…

Now I remember that flag bearer was up for a vote and Ian lost out by a small margin.
