Since we’re on the topic, anyone want to weigh in on experiences with good/bad experiences with professionals associated with Iberians or bringing PRE or PSL into the US? I know some of the big names and one or two of good and the bad stories, but always interested to hear more. There’s some people with big social media presences which always worry me a bit. PM me if you want.
Several years ago I imported a PSL from what I thought was a reputable and honest person, known to more than a few people in my area. Horse vetted fine, was then sent off to be gelded. After (slow) healing he arrived in Germany with an eye injury that was evaluated by vet and it was older, did not happen in shipping. Horse arrived in US, sent immediately to equine hospital where he was diagnosed with several neuro problems and a suspected auto immune disease. MRI showed no signs of trauma. Horse was put down several weeks later. The seller, as it turned out, lied to me about a number of things along the way, left messages willing to provide some financial help, (did not) and on and on. I will PM you.
i traveled to Lisbon to pick up a PWD bitch, and while there was taken to a Lusitano breeding training farm. They were extremely friendly and very willing to work with me if i should want one of their horses. Maybe if you traveled you could choose and arrange your own? Portugal is a wonderful place to visit…
I purchased my PSL mare directly from Yeguada la Perla - a Lusitano breeder in Spain. https://home-of-lusitanos.com/en/
The whole process was a joy!
From first email interaction discussing my want list and their recommendations with pictures and videos, through a full day visit to the stud where I was shown everything - all the stallions, ridden work, then a trip out in a jeep to meet the free ranging mares and foals, and on to the purchase process - everything was clear and professional.
Leonie speaks several languages fluently and is absolutely lovely to deal with.
The paperwork, vetting, health checks and transport were all dealt with promptly and efficiently. I was kept updated at all times
The mare arrived in the UK looking fabulous and was everything I could have dreamed of!
The whole process was stress and hassle free and if it wasn’t for the extra expense and hassle of importing to the UK now thanks to bl**dy Brexit, I’d have been back there buying my next foal too.
that is heartbreaking.
Out of curiosity, do you have legal recourse?
I actually got an equine lawyer involved. The situation was complicated because of the owner/seller/agent or whatever the person was being from Brazil, the vetting, etc done in Spain. Interestingly the Brazil person also had an LLC here in US. All that said, the lawyer’s opinion was that I had a case for breech of contract but the money I was looking to recoup (shipping and the medical bills that were not covered by insurance ) wasn’t enough to justify the legal expense required to deal with the international challenges.
UGH. Sorry
I had a great experience with Jorge at Casa Lusitania in MA. He breeds and imports Lusitanos. My trainer’s client got a great PRE from Hampton Green Farm. They are in MI and FL.
