Ice Boots

Hi there! One of my older guys gets a little sore after jumping. The ice boots I’ve used in the past don’t stay cold. What ice boots do you guys love/recommend? I’d love to hear any opinions.

I’ve been using Ice Horse ice boots and really like them. I take them to the barn in a freezer bag and they are always frozen after my ride. They apparently stay frozen for 2 hours but I haven’t tested, although I believe it. They’re super easy to put on and if you mash them up properly they do form to the horse’s legs well.

Have you tried any of the compression ones?

I have two pairs of these:

And I love them! Use them all the time. So many people at the barn have them that we have a big 'ole chest freezer in the barn which makes it easy to keep them cold. If you’re bringing them to the barn from home I think they’d stay cold enough if you kept them in a little igloo cooler or something…

Are these typically used front and back?

I do, depending on what we did that day. 20 minutes, front and back, most days when we jump. Is it overkill? Maybe, but it can’t hurt, and since I have them I use them!

Yeah, I think I would do front and back, too. I’ve been thinking of getting some, so this thread is timely. Thanks.

I have not buckled down and bought anything for my horses yet, but this stuff is so cool. I was recently at a barrel racing clinic and they had one of the towels. He literally took it out of boiling water, shook it in the air, and it was instantly COLD. I really want to get a set of leg wraps for my horse. I don’t have a living quarters so it’s always impossible for me to keep ice boots actually ICE in just a cooler on a hot day. I don’t even need ice with these! Just make them wet and shake them.

From what I understand, the fabric is the same type of fabric they use inside astronaut’s suits to keep them from sweating inside the suits. When they start to sweat, the fabric is “activated” and turns cool.

thanks, any other recommendations?

I just bought some cheapo neoprene fake SMB’s and ordered flexible ice packs off Amazon. Works fine for my needs.

We use the ice horse boots and just put ice cubes in them. I’ve been doing it this way for years and it works well.

These are my favorites as well, and I use the large size on the front legs too to provide some knee coverage.

The Equifit compression boots are very well made, but do not stay cold for very long. They are also quite large for horses with petite bone structure.
