Ice Packs

I own a pair of awesome Ice Horse Boots, love them, but the ice packs are dying sadly, but expected.

Curious, as a cheaper option, have you purchased any ice packs from say walmart that work just as good?

For 6 packs it will cost me easily over $100, I’m better off just buying the whole boot again at that point. I am looking for better price point options that would work just as good or even better.

TIA!

Since ice packs at Walmart are so cheap, I’d suggest buying some and give it a try. I got some where the plastic is quilted so to speak so the whole thing is flexible. I figured they would be great leg wraps but so far I’ve only used them in picnic and horse camping coolers :).

I have never felt that any freezer packs are quite as cold as real ice when I have an injury, or that they last as long in the drinks cooler as a huge bag of gas station ice, but then that is much higher volume. And you are only going to be icing a horse for 15 minutes not trying to keep steaks from going rancid while camped out in gorgeous open grassland with no shade

My guess is there is not much functional difference between freezer packs for camping and for horse boots. If you distrust Walmart you could see if an outdoor gear store has slightly better kinds.

I think the only issue would be if the packs didn’t fit the pockets on the boots. The Walmart quilted ones could be cut to fit.

Quilted is the wrong word maybe. The pack is divided up into cube size pockets of coolant.

Not trying to hijack but on the question of icing, is it really necessary? I read a study somewhere (can’t remember at the moment) that said icing does nothing and is not needed and the only benefit is making the owner feel better.

I believe it was @Reed who shared this, and it turns out icing actually does more damage because it tells the cells not to heal. Hope he can chime in anyways and let us know!

Icing for acute injuries to reduce swelling inflammation and pain is still considered best practices for humans and horses both.

Icing as a regular part of post exercise recovery has been debunked for both humans and horses. Most of the research is on humans. It’s a relatively new shift that current kinesiology students are learning.

You can buy the ice cell type things from Amazon and they’re fine, yes.

A friend who suffers migraines got a fabric icepack from Walgreen’s.
It is thin & gel-filled, but flexible even straight from the freezer.

I’ve used it & it stays good & cold for at least 15min & easily wraps around knees (mine).
Eyeball estimate is 4" wide X 12" long.

Would that fit in your boots?
Can be folded double if you need to.

These are the ones I have and I’ve gotten a lot of use out of them: https://www.amazon.com/Rubbermaid-Fl…5455438&sr=8-7

Can you stuff those FreezePops in there? Those things are cheap, and you can eat them when you’re done.
