yes and no. Technically a social security number needs to be provided in order to receive a paycheck (for tax withholding and reporting). It’s how the federal government ensures the correct amount of taxes are witheld and reported. Legally required by the government to do this. If you are legally hired within the US< you are supposed to apply for one through social security .
My SSN has been stolen twice by people to work under. I got my second notification letter a few weeks ago.
I’m sorry, but identity theft/crime is not justified by that line of reasoning. And somehow, I doubt that it is a rare occurrence.
I’m sorry but if you don’t understand the difference between food and health care being necessities and basic human rights vrs a parade that clearly most of the country didn’t want being not a necessity then we have nothing to discuss
I’m not very familiar with quarter horse racing. Do QH race trainers operate similar to thoroughbred racing trainers where trainers are at the track temporarily, and backstretch people essentially work gig-to-gig for whichever trainer is racing at that track on that day?
“Hi Person. You look like a jockey, will you please exercise Doc Bar at 7am today and tomorrow? OK. Here’s $100. Thanks, we leave on Wednesday and will probably not see you again until next year.” In this scenario, the trainer is even less of an employer and the rider is less of an employee than I am my Uber driver’s employer. Uber might issue a 1099 to some name/ssn if an account earns over $5k, but no one is hiring a private investigator to confirm that the person driving matches that name/ssn. That isn’t an obligation.
You bring up some good points. There is a way to protect people from modern day slavery, but if the current government follows racist ideology, there is no current way to address this. The worker visa program would need to be expanded significantly.
Absolutely millionaires should pay their workers better, but there are lots of farmers that are not millionaires and when you are struggling to make ends meet, it may be cheaper to sell the farm or go into foreclosure then keep farming.
The 250th anniversary of a military force united to stop (successfully) King George III, a mentally unstable monarch and narcissist.
Why?
What has changed about the situation now versus say, six months ago where now there is some catastrophic risk to the State that was somehow completely unnoticed before?
Your neighborhood attorney here to remind everyone that presence in the US without immigration documentation is a civil offense. It is punishable by a fine by Federal law as well as an extensive civil removal procedure.
You only get a felony if you come back after already being formally deported via civil removal procedure. Everyone in these photos being arrested is not guilty of a crime by very definition of the law.
There isn’t any human rights that have been broken in the illegal arrests, they are arrested, detained, fed and watered and returned home… on our dime. We are not starving these people, denying them medical care or such. They are not protected under our constitutional rights. If you come here illegally, you should be arrested and deal with the consequences.
If you wanted to come here under asylum you have a responsibility to go to a port of entry and declare so in which you are provided due process.
Why do American’s have problems with this?
You can see to it as you will. The Army is a vast group of individuals that allows American’s to sleep safely at night and continue about their American lives everyday. If they want to throw a 250th anniversary parade and party to celebrate, I support it. Regardless of who is at the podium.
Nonsense.
Thank you for this reminder.
That is a falsehood.
Even you admit that they are “illegal arrests”.
The entirety of the situation needs to be rehashed. The American farmer has been on the short end of the stick for a long time. Being paid prices for their crops and milk and meat for less than the cost to produce it. Those prices are regulated by the government in their ever-fluctuating markets. Those prices allow food prices to stay cheap in America but also allows the farmer to take the hit while the middle men reap the profits. If the government had fixed minimum market prices paid to farmers; it would be more sustainable to protect our food supply.
As for the current administration; I opt to turn off the tv and stop reading the media outlets. Everyone will point fingers regardless of who is in office. But I stand firm in my beliefs that this should be a bipartisan issue, not red and not blue. Immigration needs to be treated with a stiff arm in this country. Not just for our country but for the immigrants working in these roles. While it may seem harsh to the outside eye, ICE raids and immigration enforcement is, in the long run, protecting them; not just our country. If it is treated with a stiff arm by every city, town and federal government administration; less people take advantage of those at the bottom of the totem pole (speaking about employers), we have safer populations being admitted to this country, and everyone is paying into the system fairly like everyone else. Treat it the same across the board and everyone starts playing by the rules. Same reason for the border crossings in Mexico coming to an all out stop. Set the rules, enforce the rules, hold people accountable and the BS stops.
As for the horse raid issues; if people are being taken out of the stable by ICE, I do agree that other people in the barn should be notified by an officer so the animals are taken care of. Either other employees that are in the vicinity or the employer themselves. I don’t think anyone is intentionally trying to leave horses in dangerous situations but it’s the same as a dog or cat owner being arrested in everyday America and it should be treated as such
Genuinely I just can’t fathom why people have problem with people seeking asylum in our country. I do not care at all if someone is here legally or illegally. Citizenship isn’t an all clear whether or not someone is a decent lawful person. And I don’t believe for a second that if immigrants were all gone that I as a taxpayer would suddenly be saving oodles of money
They are legitimate arrests of illegal peoples. Being an illegal in this country is a crime and it is punishable under law. Being an undocumented individual is a civil violation under the law. But unauthorized entry and/or re-entry to the country is a criminal offense under US Code 8 U.S.C 1325. This includes entering the country at a time or place not designated by officials or making false statements during entry.
Why do people defending illegal immigration say that people speaking out against it have issues with Asylum seekers? Nobody has any issue with Asylum seekers, but like any other country in the world, we have a process on how to seek Asylum in the US and the first step in that process is going to a port of entry.
So with the millions of people streaming over the border in the past 4 years, and all of these people being detained by ICE, who went to the port of entry and declared asylum? Likely none of them. Again… it boils down to accountability. No other country in the world would tolerate this
No one expects any other country in the world to tolerate this.
yes and now. Simply being undocumented is a civil violation under the law. Coming across the border in an unauthorized entry or reentry is a criminal offense. This means every person streaming over the border illegally, outside of a port of entry falls under the federal crime sector of the law. It is no longer a civil violation at that point
I mean, if I were seeking asylum and knew that declaring as such to the lawful authorities would most likely have my ass turned around and marched back to where I came from then yes I probably would not go through the proper channels. Especially when there’s so many hoops to jump through anyways and no guaranteed path to citizenship.
Personally I value peoples lives and wellbeing over lines on a map but to each their own. Regardless the increased raids will be devastating to the racing industry and equestrian industry as a whole.
And what if they have simply out-stayed their visas? It takes a LOT of time and money to get a green card. You enter legally, with a visa, become a well-trained and valued groom, and cannot get a new visa or extension?
Sometimes you must return to your country of origin and reapply, causing undue hardship on everyone involved.
