ICE Raid At Delta Downs

I wasn’t aware I was dragging anything across multiple threads. I guess your manifestos and diatribes were too distracting.

It was never about just “wanting people to do it the right way”

It might be, for those who realize how broken our immigration system is. “Doing it the right way” takes years and is very expensive, and people get treated like sh*t along the way. So they’re ok with it, because there are so few slots available.

This post is not directed toward anyone in particular.

I think the people who are okay with ICE doing what it does any way it wants to do it essentially are on board with the whole Stephen Miller thing of “the cruelty is the point.”

Cruelty is an essential part of the current anti-immigration strategy: the idea is to make the potential consequences of being arrested by ICE so, literally, traumatizing, both for the person who gets arrested and for any family members, friends, colleagues, fellow-workers, employers, and even onlookers that at least some people will be deterred from attempting to come into the U.S. even legitimately.

So, in addition to those people who might otherwise have come to the U.S. without a visa or permit being deterred, international students, travelers, relatives of people who are already legally here, etc. will also be deterred.

And, for the hard-liners, that’s perfectly okay. They really don’t want anyone else coming to the U.S. (unless, of course, they have a billion dollars or so kicking around to invest and essentially buy their way in).

For the ultra-hard-liners, this xenophobia is part of a cultural and “racial purity” strategy. For others, it’s just easy to blame immigrants for whatever happens to be their own pet peeve.

Just my opinion.

I did the same and got this. :woman_shrugging:t3:The middle article is about the 19 yo left behind at the gas station in Oxnard but it doesn’t say how old the second child is.

Unless you are white and from South Africa.

It doesn’t matter how old the second child is. They were left with an adult, and one they were already in the company of .
A 19 year old is not a child. He may be the child of the detained person but legally they are an adult

Watching Fox just because it “happens to be on” has the same flavor as “I only read Playboy for the articles.”

My favorite is “I only got to Hooters for the wings” personally :joy:

I think that pretty much sums it up.

ICE making random traffic stops in the city AT ALL is completely and utterly inappropriate and wrong and at odds with their previous practices.

That’s not the role they’re meant to play or played in the past. It makes us all less safe.

I’m much more afraid of these agents, running amok with arrogance and big guns and rough tactics, than of any immigrant.

We used to make fun of East Germany and the rest of the Iron Curtain for “papers please” and these horrific tactics.

It really doesn’t matter. It’s the squirrel that proponents focus on. It Keeps their eyes off nuclear escalation, looming wars in the Middle East (like how many times do you have to touch a hot stove to just walk away) pay no attention to the health care crisis. The constitutional crisis. Let’s focus on our perceived enemy. Yes it’s the immigrant doing back breaking work to support their family. Get him! Then they can sleep at night. Barf

Exactly this - and it’s disgusting, inhumane, and un-American.

For shame. :disappointed:

The term illegal alien is not semantics. It’s used purposely by some as a way to dehumanize people. Good news organizations are about presenting facts, not about dehumanizing people. That’s why AP Style recommends using “undocumented immigrants.” Language matters.

Has anyone heard if ICE has gone hunting in nursing homes or hospitals?

She probably didn’t read my post with the AP breaking down their decision to not use the word since apparently everything I write is either a diatribe or a manifesto. Also the media probably all has an agenda to promote, y’know. :upside_down_face:

But agreed.

No I read it. For once it wasn’t a 6 paragraph rant about your childhood or your old car or whatever else .
As far as the semantics issue, I don’t care. I have always called them that, since the Mariel boat lift and will continue to do so
