Icons of the Decades?

Hi everybody!

I’m pretty new here, but since my friday nights resolve around having a glass of wine and talking about horses, I got to thinking about one topic in particular.

If you could define each decade by a certain “icon,” what would it be? ex) X crest release defined Y decade, X stallion was exceptionally popular in Y decade. … (or year if you really want to get into it!)

1980’s: 1984 Olympics and Abdullah; when the USET jumpers were unstoppable.

1990’s: Rox Dene and the perfection of “The Look” of the modern show hunter.

2000’s: Big Pharma comes to the Horse World. The advent of “maintenance.”

2010’s: The Incredible Shrinking Fences; it’s now a REALLY big deal for an amateur to jump 3’.

1990’s: Tailored sportsman greenish breeches, striped shirts for showing. Custom chaps and jeans for schooling.

2000’s Bright solid shirts with light grey or tan coats for showing.

2010’s: White tech shirts with navy coats for showing…Hunter derbies

80’s: Land of the Crest Release.

Lady Eboshi nailed it!

Love these! Thanks guys!

90s - unapproved helmets, striped shirts, bulky boots, edgewood, puke green TS, the last stand for the TB as a mainstream sport horse.

00s - Skunk helmets, solid color shirts with dimension woven into the fabric, Jimmy’s, tan TS (side zip), WB, the thicker the better.

10s - Charles Owen. Speed Air, white shirts, tech coats, Euroseat front zip breeches, Pytchleys, WB but on the lighter side

I am DYING laughing at these!!!

Here’s a question: I showed most in the late 80s/early 90s as a junior, and then showed briefly as an amateur in the mid 2000s. Both times in Zone 3.

I distinctly remember “better living through chemistry” being present in the late 80s/early 90s.

When I did the re-riding thing in 2005-ish, I don’t remember it being any worse. It was definitely very present in 2005, but didn’t seem any MORE present than in the early 90s - it was just that the substances themselves had changed.

Am I misremembering? Was there really a sea change?

Whre would you put pinto horses in the hunter ring?

My early riding years were spent being mesmerized by a single horse. Gem Twist!

1960’s and '70ies. Rodney:yes:

I remember I used to try to get my mom to drive past the Chapots thinking I might be able to catch a glimpse of Gem.

I always ride with my reins too long and my trainer keeps threatening to put rainbow reins on my bridle. I tell her only if I can bust out my clackity petal bell boots, full fringe chaps, and polly pad circa late 90s/early 00s.

00s- an increase in the french made and softer leather saddles, leading to a switch to breeches and tall boots or half chaps as schooling attire.

10s- custom saddles - the more blocking the better, custom everything else, juniors with instagram accounts that make my former party-girl self blush.

60’s - outside courses,Rodney, Bernie T., Neal Shapiro, open jumper stakes classes and nothing but TB and an occasional mixed breed ala Snowman.
70’s - still outside courses, velvet collars on jackets and open stakes become “Grand Prix” i think the hunter classics started too.
80’s - drugs for both horses and riders(Cocaine started getting popular) less outside courses and the start of the ring hunter
90’s - Big eq really started to gain momentum - lots of riders in those classes.
2000’s - the sport has gotten very expensive and grown in ways no one in the 50 and 60’s would believe! what is an amateur? The spelling has changed to shamateur…(Just my humble opinion from observation)

I Spent my Saturdays at the pony ring so, my memories were ofMillbrook snowgooose, smokey Joe snowgoose ridden by Greg Best, Hot Shot Kid and Terry Ruddwatching immaculately turned out small mediums who had apparently never seen a pile of manure or a mud puddle :eek:in their lives:D

preparation for the ring was done with a needle:yes: either in a van/ or trailer
with a needle; it was hardly tried to be hidden ; better rounds through chemistry could have been the motto for thedecade
