Ideal Saddlery - fit questions and fitter recommendation

Searching for a dressage saddle and my favorites are British made. Anyone here ride in or are familiar with Ideal Saddlery? Are there any good Ideal reps in the Western States? I am in no man’s land with NO brand reps or designated English tack shops in my state, so it’s a given that I will do a long-distance fitting. Would love some feedback.

I like the design of Ideal’s Martine and Suzannah models.

Looking for:
-high quality leather that wears well and won’t crack or fade
-grippy leather
-wool flocked
-soft/comfortable, moderately deep seat
-narrow or medium twist
-moderate knee rolls (prefer tapered or covered, not a long exterior block)
-allows me to have a slight bend in my knee (not a super straight leg)
-I am 5’4", 120 lbs with a muscular thigh and longer femur (think typical gymnast leg conformation), not leggy

Horse needs a slightly curvy tree. He’s a 15 H Quarter horse, has moderate withers, built more like a small TB (not stocky), fairly narrow (I’m thinking Medium tree. He’s too narrow for my MW tree BC Solare jump saddle without a half pad). Horse does need to build up his topline. He doesn’t have any major conformation issues to address with regard to saddle fit.

Would the Martine or Suzannah be worth looking at based on our criteria? Any feedback you have on Ideal dressage saddles (or another mid-priced brand that seems to fit my specs) would be fantastic! Many thanks.

Try Hastilow USA competition saddles. Very reputable fitters and very helpful. They do carry Ideals. I think Ideals are very underrated saddle brand. Great quality for the price. I own an Ideal Jessica I’m trying to sell ( no longer need it) but they also carry several other British brands. I bought a lovely Black Country from them. I can understand living in the middle of nowhere. You can purchase a fitting kit from them and send them tracings and do it all through
the mail. They have a website with saddle listings and FB page too.

There is a rep near Sacramento - not sure if that helps you?

I am pretty sure you have sat in an Ideal saddle before and just did not know it. They actually make saddles for 55 other brands under their name. It is one of the larger companies in Walsall now. It would help to know where you are located to be able to make recommendations in fitters.

I’m in Utah.

Years ago had a Ideal Jessica and really liked the saddle. I ordered directly from the company with no problems. Since your horse is only 15H, please make sure the saddle is made for a shorter back. The reason my saddle was sold, new horse with a cob-sized back.

Bump - any other recommendations for great saddle fitters anywhere in Western United States for Ideal Saddles? Thanks again.

Can’t help you on Ideals locally–I have ridden in them in the UK and they are good quality saddles, but I would like to point out that there are several brand reps and independent saddle fitters in Utah–David Gilpin is an independent, there is a Custom rep, a Trilogy rep, N2 have a rep. Horse Crazy in Draper are a Passier rep, one of the French saddle companies has a rep, the Schleese rep visits regularly, and these are just a few I know of.

Contact Lindsey in Texas. https://www.facebook.com/lwfequinetherapy/?pnref=about.overview

Did you get in touch with Hastilow USA? They carry Ideal, and can point you in the direction of a fitter. I contacted them about Albion, and they got me in touch with a fitter in my state that same day. I ended up going with a Hastilow saddle. It arrives Friday and I am beyond excited.

I have an Ideal dressage saddle. I’ll need to check which model it is.

I’ve been happy with the fit and the leather quality.

If there isn’t a fitter in Utah who can help you, I can give you input on a few people who can do this remotely.

Pelham Saddlery carries Ideal saddles new. They are located in NH but do a lot of remote saddle fitting. You could try them.
