Ideas - Cat with high temperature, not eating, but . .

Why are you afraid to discuss pain medication with your vet? If he/she says no, then so be it.

I’m not.

Why do you keep deflecting? Actually, I don’t care, so never mind. You seem to think it’s been one thing for 10 months, but it hasn’t. You seem to think that I’ve been what, torturing him for 10 months? I haven’t. Until 2 weeks ago, he was healthy, with no symptoms of anything. We beat the histo - look upthread. Pain meds would not have helped him then in any case, as the problem was a reaction to the antifungal he was on. Again, it’s all upthread.

“Why do you keep deflecting?” Because I am not a vet. The discussion is best left to you and your vet and it appears that has been no discussion of that option. I apologize if you did ask and was turned down because you never indicated that.

You are not the only one dealing with an ill kitty, BTW.

wow. back off or slow your roll. you ae dealing with a human being whop has feelings and is also ill. we get that you are concerned but is kicking the owner’s ass really the way? or necessary?

now back to our regular programming.

@Alex_and_Bodie_s_Mom - I hope the vet trip is productive and there is a light at the end of this tunnel. I also hope you are feeling a bit better.

I didn’t give Dewey pain medicine but his situation was different. He went down fast. It was less than 4 days from when he started feeling bad to when he was put to sleep (the first symptom was constipation).

I hope you can take Nigel to vet tomorrow. It sounds like it’s probably time to check in and see what they suggest. As long as he’s still drinking, that’s good and you can work with that.

HUGS to you and Nigel. I hope you both have a restful night and will feel better tomorrow.

I’m so sorry - I didn’t realize Dewey’s decline was so quick. I thought you had a lot longer with him - just the way I read your posts, I guess.

He’s got an appointment today at 2:30. They said I could drop him off, but I didn’t think the added stress of being there was going to be helpful.

I didn’t give him the Cerenia last night. His attitude seems slightly better this morning, so I’m thinking maybe the Cerenia didn’t work well with him. He drank quite a bit at the fountain, and actually wants out of the crate now. I am hoping the vet can give us some good news on some pain relief. Probably we will do labs again to see where we are. But I’m terribly afraid.

Dewey was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure in November. I lost him in June. So I had him for about 7 months after the diagnosis. I guess that’s not too bad since his levels were high (stage 4) in November. When the end came in June, it came fast.

Best of luck at the vet today. I hope the vet can do something to help him feel better.

Nigel has been feeling a little better all day - vet agrees that the Cerenia is not something we can use for him. He’s nibbled at dry food, and has been more vocal and wanting attention. Since he didn’t eat most of the weekend, the vet wanted to wait a few days on more labs.

He had his B12 and a steroid shot - and objected to both very much! Gave him subQ’s when I got home, as storms are moving this way and wanted to wrap up his treatment. He was quite angry at the vet, as you can see:

eeek. that face - right out of a horror movie. Angry kitteh.

Glad he has perked up a bit and was feeling ornery enough to object. Go Nigel.

I hope the storms aren’t too bad. We had fall this week in Nor Cal and this weekend we get summer again with temps in high 80s. wth

Good news that he’s nibbling at food, wanting attention, and being cranky at the vet office! I hope he’s even better tomorrow.

The weather is crazy - storms that shouldn’t spawn tornadoes are, a huge round is moving in from western Kansas, and we’re watching 2 storms in OK that are both tornado-warned; I’ve never seen a pattern quite like the one I see on radar for them. They’re literally laying out a path ahead of them with clouds and light rain, but that path is some 150 miles long, if not more. I’ve never seen anything like it. It is a very weird weather night.

Anyway, Nigel is eating more dry on his own, hanging out in my room (first time in almost 4 days!), wanting attention, even chirping at me. The vet wanted to try steroids first, before we tried pain meds, especially since his kidneys are in such bad shape already. If that works, we can do prednisone in liquid form.

That sounds good. I’m glad poor ol’ Nigel is feeling chirpier. You go boy!

Thank you - I think I will keep my earthquakes.

A quick update: the Depo (steroid) shot seems to be helping for now. Nigel has been eating dry food on his own the last couple of days, and is even starting to nibble at the kidney diet food, which he has disdained until now. If I could get him switched to that, I think it would help a lot. He resisted the subQ’s last night (but did eventually get the 100ccs), and has been wanting to go outside.

I realize it’s all touch-and-go, and I’m resisting getting my hopes up again, but at least for now, he’s comfortable and hanging out with the other cats. The Mirtaz is doing wonders for him, thank you, @shiloh! The vet ordered in another tube of it for me as well; they’re interested to see how it works, and may switch to it instead of the pills for their clients. And since he’s just getting 1/4 of a pill per day (Pepcid), he’s much happier with me.

So we’ll see how it goes. Thank you everyone for your support so far for Nigel (and me).

Nigel had been off the last two days, so I took him to the vet today. I can post his lab results if anyone wants to see them.

Essentially, although there are almost no toxins detected, and some numbers look a lot better than they did last time, he is not producing enough red blood cells. That number dropped significantly in the last month. My vet gives him a few weeks.

He also has a temperature - we think due to a gastric infection - so he got antibiotics and another B12 injection. He has been on daily Pepcid for a month, but the vet wants to put him on sucralfate as well.

Beyond heartbroken right now.
