Ideas for a barn on a budget?

I wanted a 2 stall shedrow type barn (they were actually going to be run-ins though) with an attached feed/tack area. Quotes in our area for pole barns of this type were much higher than what I was wanting to spend. So… Give me some ideas (pictures would be great) of how you have seen something like this done. Not opposed to doing some of the work ourselves, just need some help being creative. Thanks

The most creative run-in style barn I’ve ever seen was here on COTH – member is Element Farm, and she’s in one of the Carolina’s. There are pics of her place. It’s much bigger than what you’re describing but it’s a genius design – worth getting inspired by.

These or some like this are portable, made in all sizes and configurations and you can tie them down where you want them, move them when you change your mind, sell them if you want something else later:

Most any local welding shop can make similar ones, in any location.

Don’t forget the carports. I purchased one in 2005, the narrowest width they had, and ended up splitting it down the middle and half is hay storage. They come in different widths and you could surely add a stall or two to part of the building. Totally wish I had gotten the wider one as mine is 18 feet wide but the 2 horses have done very well in the 9 foot tunnel that they have. And in reality, the smaller the space, the warmer it is. Also, the Amish here build shelters at a reasonable price, just throwing that out there.

I use prefab wood buildings like these for feed, supplies, tack, and a small stock of square bales if I’m keeping any on hand:

I use home-built run in sheds for the equines.

How do the prefab buildings do in the heat ? I’m considering a small building for feed and supplements that are currently in my garage. I’m in East Texas so heat and humidity an issue. Horses have a shedrow barn with some hay storage.
Op my barn/building was here and we stalled it out with an overhang. I just miss having a feed room so something to think about.

I’ve seen some very nice metal carports turned into barns online.

I’m in Florida and they have held up really well with the exception of the wood doors, which have warped on my oldest shed (which is about 9 years old). If you go to the link I posted, that 10’ x 12’ building on the left in the 2nd double row has the wood doors, which were the cheapest option. They aren’t like house doors, just constructed from 2x4s and siding to match the shed walls. On the next shed I bought, I got a “real” door and that has worked out fine. So, I’d go with house style doors for walk in doors and the garage door style roll up doors for larger openings rather than the wood doors.

But, the sheds have all been completely weathertight, even in hurricanes and I would not hesitate to buy more if I needed them. Being wood, you will have to repaint every few years. And I’ve never had any rodent problems except one time in the one with the warped door.

At my previous house, I had a Lark metal building. Quality construction and it has held up wonderfully. A friend ended up buying the place from the people who bought it from me and the shed is still there and still in good shape. It has to be near 16-17 years old at this point.
